Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMicrosoft Edge Game Assist is now branded Microsoft Edge for Game Bar. On Windows 11 Home, Education and Pro, it may already be included with Microsoft Edge 137 or later, so check Xbox Game Bar before downloading anything. If the widget is missing, install it from Edge Settings, then open it with Win + G.
Check whether it is already installed
- Press
Win + Gto open Xbox Game Bar. - Open the Game Bar widget menu.
- Look for Edge for Game Bar or Game Assist. Microsoft’s current feature page uses “Edge for Game Bar,” while some support pages and older builds still use “Game Assist.”
- Select the widget. If it opens, no separate installation is required.
If the widget is not listed, continue with the Edge Settings method below.
Requirements
| Requirement | What you need |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, with the latest available updates installed. |
| Microsoft Edge | A current Edge installation. Microsoft says the included experience is available with Edge 137 or later on Windows 11 Home, Education and Pro. |
| Game Bar | An up-to-date Xbox Game Bar installation. |
| Microsoft Store | Access to Microsoft Store for Game Bar and related component updates. |
Microsoft describes Game Assist as a Windows 11 feature; the documented requirements do not include Windows 10. Your Edge default-browser choice does not matter: the widget uses Edge internally but does not require Edge to be your default desktop browser.
Install it from Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…), then Settings.
- Use the Settings search box and search for Game Assist. If that produces no result, search for Edge for Game Bar.
- Open the matching setting and select Install widget, if shown.
- Wait for installation to finish.
- Press
Win + Gand choose Edge for Game Bar or Game Assist from the widget menu.
Microsoft’s current instructions are documented in the Edge Game Assist FAQ. You do not need Edge Beta, an Insider channel, or a special standalone “Game Assist” installer. Those steps belonged to the November 2024 preview; Microsoft later moved the feature to the Stable channel and announced general availability on May 29, 2025.

Open and use the widget while playing
Launch it
- Start a PC game, or remain on the Windows desktop.
- Press
Win + G. - Select Edge for Game Bar/Game Assist from the widget menu.
The widget is a compact Edge browser inside Game Bar, not a full desktop Edge window. Use it for guides, videos, Discord, Twitch, Spotify and other websites without switching to the desktop.
Identify a game
Enter a game title manually with Ctrl + G, or use the widget’s option to paste the title. Automatic recognition and tailored guides are available only for games Microsoft has enhanced.
Pin or close it
- Select the pin icon to keep the widget visible after the main Game Bar interface closes.
- Select Unpin to stop it appearing over the game.
- Use the widget’s … menu for settings, profile selection, feedback or closing.
What it can—and cannot—do
Works with any PC game for browsing
Microsoft says the browser widget can be used with any PC game. That means you can open ordinary websites even when the title has no game-specific integration.
Enhanced guides are not universal
Automatic game recognition, tips and tailored guides depend on Microsoft’s supported enhanced-game list, which changes over time. Missing tips do not necessarily mean the browser itself is malfunctioning.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.

It uses Edge data
The widget shares relevant browser data with Edge, including profile data, browsing history, cookies, favorites and form fills. Desktop Edge tabs do not automatically appear in the Game Bar version.
Performance, extensions and controls
- Microsoft says the experience is optimized for gaming, but an active browser overlay can still use system resources.
- It is primarily optimized for keyboard and mouse. Controller support is still being refined.
- Extensions generally work when they run automatically on webpages or expose limited interface elements, but every desktop Edge extension feature is not guaranteed to work in the widget.
Fix a missing widget or failed installation
If Game Bar opens but Edge for Game Bar is absent
- Install all available Windows 11 updates and restart the computer.
- Update Microsoft Edge from Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Open Edge Settings and search for both Game Assist and Edge for Game Bar, then select Install widget when available.
- Update Store apps through Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, following Microsoft’s Store update instructions.
- Restart Edge and try
Win + Gagain.
A missing installation button can have several causes: an outdated Edge or Windows version, an unupdated Game Bar or Store, organization management policies, a name difference between builds, or malfunctioning Store or Gaming Services components. Microsoft’s FAQ specifically recommends updating Windows 11 and Game Bar when compatibility errors appear.
If Game Bar itself does not open
- Go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and confirm Game Bar is enabled.
- Update Microsoft Store apps.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox Game Bar > Advanced options, then try Repair. Use Reset if Repair does not help.
- Restart Windows.
- If necessary, reinstall Xbox Game Bar from Microsoft Store.
Game Bar widgets are distributed and updated through Microsoft Store mechanisms, as described in Microsoft’s Game Bar installation documentation.
If the widget installs but will not launch
- Restart Edge, then restart Windows.
- Confirm that Windows, Edge, Game Bar and Microsoft Store apps are current.
- Repair or reset the affected Store apps.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account.
- Run
wsreset.exefrom the Start menu or Run dialog to reset the Store cache. Microsoft documents this and related checks in its Store installation troubleshooting guide. - If Xbox or Game Bar components appear damaged, open the Xbox app and try its Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Reinstall Edge or Game Bar only after the earlier steps fail.
Recent Microsoft Q&A reports describe Gaming Services repair and Edge reinstallation helping in individual cases, but neither is a universal confirmed fix.

If Windows reports that an update is required
- Check Settings > System > About and verify Windows 11 is version 22H2 or newer.
- Install every available monthly update in Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart after updating.
- Update Game Bar through Microsoft Store or the Xbox app path, then retry installation.
If it remains visible after closing Game Bar
The widget is probably pinned. Press Win + G, select the widget, reveal its title bar if necessary, and choose Unpin beside the Close control. You can also use the widget’s … menu to close it.
If game-specific tips are missing
Use the widget’s feedback option and include the game title, the storefront where you obtained it, relevant version or update information, and what failed. The browser portion can continue to work even when tailored tips are unavailable.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to make Edge my default browser?
No. Microsoft says the widget works regardless of which browser is set as Windows’ default, although the widget itself is powered by Edge.

Is it the full Edge browser?
No. It is a compact Edge-powered Game Bar widget. It has browser capabilities but is not the normal desktop Edge window, and its open desktop tabs do not automatically transfer.
Can I use it with a controller?
It is optimized mainly for keyboard and mouse. Microsoft continues to refine controller support, so some navigation may be easier with a mouse and keyboard.
Can I download an unofficial installer?
No. Use the built-in Edge Settings installation route and Microsoft Store updates. Third-party “Game Assist” packages are unnecessary and create avoidable security risks.
The Bottom Line
On a fully updated Windows 11 PC, press Win + G first. If Edge for Game Bar/Game Assist is not listed, install the widget from Edge Settings, then update Windows, Edge, Game Bar and Microsoft Store components before escalating to repair or reset steps.
