Use OBS’s built-in Media Source to loop one rain video; use VLC Video Source when you want a playlist of clips, optionally shuffled. Both keep media playing in an OBS scene, but a 24/7 broadcast still depends on the computer, power, connection, and YouTube stream. For a continuous YouTube archive, plan a local recording: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Which OBS source should you use?
| Your setup | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One rain video file | Media Source | It is OBS’s built-in option for a single file; enable Loop to replay it when it ends. |
| Several rain clips in sequence or shuffled | VLC Video Source | It accepts a playlist and can restart the playlist when it ends. Shuffle is optional. |
| You do not want to install VLC | Media Source, if one file is enough | VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed and available to OBS. |
OBS documents Media Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its listed video formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; listed audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Media Source’s Loop setting is off by default. VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and exposes playlist, loop, shuffle, visibility, network-caching, audio-track, and subtitle controls. Its Loop Playlist setting is on by default. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Set up a single looping rain video
- Add the source: In OBS, select or create the scene for the broadcast. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Name it and confirm.
- Choose the file: In the source properties, select the local rain video file. Check that the preview shows the picture and that the audio meters respond if the clip includes sound.
- Enable looping: Turn on Loop. This is not enabled by default for Media Source, so verify it rather than assuming the clip will restart.
- Check visibility behavior: Decide what should happen if the source is hidden and later shown. For a scene that may be switched or toggled, test the behavior so playback resumes as you expect.
- Preview before broadcasting: Watch and listen through the end of the file and its restart. Confirm that the transition is acceptable and that the audio does not unexpectedly stop or restart at a different level.
Set up a VLC playlist for multiple clips
- Install VLC first: VLC Video Source appears only when VLC is installed. Match architectures; OBS documents 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add the source: In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Add the rain clips to its playlist in the order you want.
- Set playlist behavior: Leave Loop Playlist enabled if the sequence should restart after its final clip. Enable shuffle only if you want the order to vary rather than repeat consistently.
- Set visibility and audio options: VLC’s visibility choices include stop/restart, pause/unpause, or always play. Select the behavior appropriate to your scene, and check the audio-track and subtitle settings if they matter to your files.
- Test the whole cycle: Preview more than the opening seconds. Verify that clips load, the final clip returns to the beginning of the list, and the transitions and audio are acceptable.
Keep a 24/7 broadcast running
Looping controls what happens when a media file or playlist ends; it does not make the broadcast itself unattended or guarantee uptime. OBS’s source documentation does not establish a guarantee of continuous operation. A local setup still relies on the computer staying on, stable power and internet, a functioning media file, OBS and its encoder, and the platform connection.
- Keep the scene containing the media source active, and test the source’s visibility behavior before leaving it unattended.
- Monitor audio and video output before relying on the stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream audio and video quality.
- Keep a local recording if you need a complete copy of the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends recording a local archive as backup. A 24/7 stream should not be assumed to produce one complete YouTube archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- If a platform archive matters, consider whether shorter scheduled streams better fit your needs. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours; do not promise viewers a fixed rewind window. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Check rights for the rain video and audio
For YouTube, use footage and sound you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content; a detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder, and an unresolved match may interrupt or terminate it. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Details are in YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Prefer your own rain recording or a license that clearly permits the intended live use, territory, and any archived replay. Keep the license documentation. A rain recording and any music or other embedded audio can have separate rights, so do not assume that a sound labeled “rain” is automatically free to use.
