Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says working with PlayStation remains possible: “Competition and collaboration can coexist.” Her comment is a general position, not an announcement of a new Xbox–Sony project. It follows Xbox becoming the publishing partner for Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT after Sony stopped funding the game.
What did Asha Sharma say about working with PlayStation?
GamesRadar reported on October 2, 2026, that Sharma made the comment in an interview with The New York Times. The report quoted her saying, “Competition and collaboration can coexist,” in response to the possibility of future work with PlayStation. The available reporting establishes her openness to collaboration in general; it does not announce a joint project or agreement between Xbox and Sony.

Why is the comment being linked to PHYSINT?
Xbox Wire announced on September 9, 2026, that Xbox and Kojima Productions had expanded their partnership, with Xbox set to publish PHYSINT. Kojima described the project as an action-espionage game. The announcement also said the expanded relationship would reach into film and television. Sharma said, “Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life.” Kojima said, “This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD.”

Kojima Productions confirmed Xbox as its new PHYSINT partner the following day. The Washington Post reported that Sony told the studio in mid-June it would stop funding the game. According to Kojima, Sony gave no reason for the decision; that is Kojima’s account, not an explanation issued by Sony.
Xbox Wire’s partnership announcement and Kojima Productions’ confirmation establish the publisher change. The change explains the timing of questions about Xbox and PlayStation, but it does not show that the companies made a deal with each other.

What is confirmed—and what is not?
- Confirmed: Xbox is PHYSINT’s publishing partner, following Sony’s departure from funding the project.
- Not announced: A new Xbox–Sony collaboration or joint PHYSINT agreement.
- Not settled in the cited reporting: PHYSINT’s platforms and whether it will be exclusive to Xbox.
In an IGN interview summarized by Pure Xbox, Kojima said platform details would be announced later and that exclusivity was a question for Xbox. That leaves no basis to promise the game will launch on Xbox, PlayStation, or any other platform.

How should readers interpret the Sony funding change?
Kojima Productions pushed back on speculation about why Sony left the project and on related claims about Death Stranding’s commercial performance and PHYSINT’s production plans. The studio said those claims did not come from official or on-the-record sources, urged readers to be skeptical, and stated that its relationship with PlayStation remained strong.
Those statements do not explain Sony’s decision or establish what future work Sony and Kojima Productions may pursue. They do make clear that unofficial theories about the change should not be treated as confirmed facts. Kojima Productions’ statement addresses the speculation.
