Resident Evil executive producer Jun Takeuchi says Requiem is meant to carry both an “answer” and a “question”—but he has not yet explained what either refers to. The reported wordplay turns the title into more than a reference to the ordinary meaning of “requiem”; whether the RE/Q construction is convincing is another matter.
What did Jun Takeuchi say about the meaning of Requiem?
In GamesRadar+’s English-language report on a Japanese magazine special for Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary, executive producer Jun Takeuchi offers this hint: “Since we’re on the subject, let me give you a hint: ‘Requiem’ isn’t just a title chosen for its meaning of ‘requiem.’ The spelling of Requiem (REQUIEM) contains not only the ‘RE (response)’ mentioned earlier, but also a ‘Q (question).’ In other words, this ‘Requiem’ presents both an ‘answer’ and a ‘question.’ I will explain the meaning of that at some point in the future.”
That is the reported explanation so far, not a solution to the title’s mystery. Takeuchi identifies the RE/Q wordplay and says it presents an answer and a question, then leaves their meaning for a future explanation. The English wording is GamesRadar+’s rendering; the Japanese source text was not independently checked here.
What does the RE/Q wordplay establish—and what does it leave open?
Takeuchi’s hint makes a distinction between the title’s familiar word and its spelling: Requiem is not chosen only for what the word means; its letters also supply “RE (response)” and “Q (question).” But he does not specify what the question is, what answer responds to it, or how the two relate to the game’s story.

PC Gamer describes the ordinary associations of “requiem” as prayer for the deceased or remembrance. That gives the title one legible reading, but it does not settle Takeuchi’s intended reference. Nor does his hint confirm a particular plot twist or say that the letters map onto specific characters or events.
Why is the explanation hard to get on board with?
PC Gamer writer Elie Gould is unconvinced by the extra layer, comparing it to “GCSE English blue curtain vibes”—a reaction to symbolism that can feel imposed rather than earned. That is Gould’s opinion, not a statement from Takeuchi or Capcom. She also says she wants to hear the fuller explanation, which is fair: the current hint names a device without explaining its payoff.

The game’s promotional art has also been observed to turn the Q into a nine, but that is an observation about the design, not a confirmed explanation from Capcom. Without Takeuchi’s promised context, it would be a leap to treat the visual as proof of what the “question” or “answer” means.
How does the title hint fit the wider Resident Evil context?
GamesRadar+ places Takeuchi’s remark in a broader discussion of the series’ numbered entries and remakes. It reports that he described the two tracks as ongoing story in the numbered games and revisiting the past in remakes, and said preparations for an eventual crossover between them had gradually been underway since Resident Evil Village. Umbrella, Spencer and Raccoon City’s return in Requiem are part of that context.

That forward-looking crossover framing does not confirm remakes of specific games such as Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6, nor does it explain the RE/Q wordplay. GamesRadar+ notes that the interview comments have appeared in slightly different translations, another reason not to treat one English phrase as a complete roadmap.
For gameplay background, an Epic Games Store article published February 16, 2026 describes Requiem as one unified story alternating between Grace Ashcroft’s horror-focused sections and Leon Kennedy’s action-focused sections. That contrast may help explain the game’s structure, but the article features producer Masato Kumazawa and does not connect that design to Takeuchi’s title explanation.

So what does Requiem mean?
The safest answer is that Takeuchi has offered a clue, not the deeper meaning itself: the title combines the ordinary word with RE (“response”) and Q (“question”), and he says it presents both an answer and a question. What those terms point to remains undisclosed. Gould’s skepticism is understandable because the wordplay currently asks the audience to accept a symbolic layer before its significance is clear; a fuller explanation could make it click, but the hint alone does not.
