To run a foggy forest ambience stream continuously on YouTube, prepare footage and sound you have the rights to use, send them through an encoder to a YouTube live event, and keep the encoder, power and internet connection available. You can do this with OBS on a computer; if you do, plan for interruptions and archive limits rather than assuming a single stream will run or save without interruption.
1. Prepare footage and sound you can use
Original forest footage and field-recorded ambience give you the clearest basis for a stream. If you use someone else’s video or audio, verify that the permission explicitly covers YouTube livestreaming, your intended territories, monetized use if applicable, and any recording or archive you leave on the channel. Keep the license and permission records available.
Permission and avoiding a live interruption are not the same thing. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains. Even licensed content may be interrupted unless the rights owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. “Royalty-free” does not, by itself, mean that automated matching cannot occur.
If YouTube interrupts the broadcast, check the notice in YouTube Studio and address the specific rights issue. A match notice alone is not a legal determination about your rights.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Choose an encoder and prepare the live event
YouTube can receive a live feed from an encoder. An encoder may be software running on your computer or a standalone hardware device. OBS Studio is a no-charge software option. First-time live-stream activation on YouTube can take up to 24 hours, so enable access before the time you intend to launch. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Configure OBS for your computer
OBS lists operating-system and graphics requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee that a particular computer can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, scene and encoder settings. CPU load varies with those choices. In OBS, open Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration for your hardware, as suggested by the OBS system requirements guidance.
For slowly changing forest footage, begin with a modest resolution and frame rate that suit the source rather than choosing the highest output by default. Run a representative test of the moving image and sound, and watch encoder load, dropped frames, network stability, and the loop’s visual and audio transitions. This is a practical way to catch problems before a long broadcast; no general hardware requirement guarantees 24/7 operation.

Create the event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event in the Live Control Room. If live streaming is new to the channel, allow for activation to take up to 24 hours.
- In the event’s encoder setup, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Start the encoder preview and check the incoming picture and sound in the Live Control Room before beginning the broadcast.
- Confirm that viewers can open the event from the channel or watch page, including on mobile. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
3. Set the video, audio and network parameters
Choose settings that match your source footage, computer or encoder, and stable upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, at up to 60 frames per second. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 supported | Use a codec your encoder and workflow support. |
| Bitrate example | For H.264 at 1080p30, 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended | This is YouTube’s recommendation for that specific resolution, frame rate and codec—not a guarantee of quality or a universal requirement. |
| Rate control and keyframes | For RTMP/RTMPS, CBR recommended; two-second keyframe interval recommended, not over four seconds | Set these in the encoder’s output or streaming settings. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 for stereo; 128 kbps recommended | Check that the ambience remains audible and does not clip or cut out. |
| Transport | RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport | Choose the secure ingest option when configuring the event and encoder. |
These values come from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance, accessed October 3, 2026; the page’s publication date is not stated. The right output depends on the source and connection, and this is not a benchmark of any particular computer or internet provider.
YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity 20% above the stream bitrate to leave headroom for network variation. For instance, a stream using a 5 Mbps bitrate calls for more than 5 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation—not merely a connection advertised at that speed. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips, accessed October 3, 2026. Other devices and network activity can reduce the capacity available to the encoder.

4. Keep the broadcast running and recover from interruptions
A local OBS setup depends on the computer remaining on, the encoder continuing to run, and the internet connection and power staying available. YouTube recommends upload headroom and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. Plan how you will notice and recover from encoder restarts, lost connectivity and power loss. The guidance cited here does not establish a specific failover service or backup-power size. If you consider a UPS, size it for the actual combined encoder and network load rather than assuming a particular unit has been validated for your setup.
Test the complete chain—video playback, sound, encoder output and YouTube preview—before relying on it for a long session. During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the actual picture and audio. A loop can be technically live while still having a frozen image, silent audio or an obvious discontinuity.

5. Decide how you want to handle archives
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule does not establish that a single 24-hour broadcast will be saved in full. If retaining VODs matters, one option is to run sessions under 12 hours and keep their archives; another is to keep the continuous broadcast while separately saving the original footage and project files. The archive guidance is in YouTube’s encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026.

In its August 12, 2026 explanation of qualified watch hours, YouTube says archived livestreams can contribute to qualified watch hours, while live streams that are not archived are excluded. That does not mean every live-view hour qualifies or that a stream longer than the archive window will retain all of its VOD. Read YouTube’s qualified watch hours and Shorts views explanation for the platform’s details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Make the content original; don’t assume monetization
Copyright permission and monetization review are separate. YouTube’s channel monetization policy requires original, non-repetitious content and says reused-content review is distinct from copyright enforcement, permission and fair use. A license to use a forest clip does not establish that a channel meets monetization policy, and a Content ID allowlist does not resolve that policy question.
Consider shaping the stream as a distinct creative work: use footage from your own locations, make deliberate sound-design choices, and give the scene meaningful changes in weather or light where the source allows. These are ways to make your contribution clearer, not guaranteed acceptance criteria. A loop or static image is not automatically eligible or ineligible on that basis alone. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies. For exact current Partner Program eligibility thresholds, consult YouTube’s current Partner Program information; no threshold figures are stated here.
