A long-term substitute teacher in Iowa was fired after telling students they could receive extra credit for donating to her personal GoFundMe for a planned trip to Ecuador. An administrative law judge later denied her unemployment benefits, finding that the conduct was job-related misconduct. Those were separate decisions: the school district terminated her employment, and the judge ruled on benefit eligibility.
Why was Stephanie Mullaley fired?
Iowa Capital Dispatch reported that Stephanie Mullaley, a full-time, long-term substitute high school teacher at Clinton Community School District, offered students extra credit toward their grades in exchange for cash donations to her personal GoFundMe. The district fired her on May 29, 2026, reportedly because it concluded she had violated its ethics policy. Iowa Capital Dispatch’s September 29, 2026 report said some students donated.
The reported findings say students felt pressured to contribute. The available account does not establish which donations, if any, came from students, or how much of the fundraiser total they provided.
What did the judge decide about unemployment benefits?
Administrative Law Judge Duane Golden later denied Mullaley’s request for unemployment benefits. As reported by Iowa Capital Dispatch, Golden found job-related misconduct and said her actions showed a “willful or wanton disregard” of her employer’s interests. The report quoted his findings as saying Mullaley had “promised high school students in her class that they would receive extra credit toward their grade in her class if they donated to her GoFundMe account” and that “Students felt pressured to donate money to her personal GoFundMe page.”

That ruling addressed unemployment-benefit eligibility. It was not a criminal conviction, a decision in a civil lawsuit, or a general ruling about teachers. The complete administrative decision was not available in the reported account, so its full evidence and legal analysis cannot be independently assessed here.
What was the Ecuador fundraiser for?
Mullaley’s fundraiser described a planned July 2026 trip to Ecuador with her husband, where she said she would interpret for a medical mission team and help bridge language barriers. Her husband was expected to assist the team. The listed expenses included flights, buses, boats, food, and accommodation. The fundraiser details reproduced by Iowa Capital Dispatch show a $1,800 goal and $140 raised from six donations of $5 to $50 before activity was paused. The reporting does not say whether the trip took place.

What is known about the case—and what is not?
State records summarized in the report indicate Mullaley had worked for the district since 2022, first as a paraeducator and later as a full-time, long-term substitute high school teacher. The judge’s reported findings concerned her discussions with students during the 2025–26 school year. The district’s termination came on May 29, 2026, and the benefits decision followed later that year.
Iowa Capital Dispatch said it could not reach Mullaley for comment. The account reports the district’s stated ethics-policy basis for firing her, but provides no fuller district response. A KCRG version republished the report and is not a separate investigation.
