Sean Gunn Is Open to Returning as Kraglin, Despite Retiring from Rocket Motion Reference

Sean Gunn says he would answer Marvel’s call to play Kraglin again, but that is an expression of interest—not a confirmed return. His retirement comment concerns the physically demanding motion-reference work he did for Rocket, not acting in the MCU as a whole.

Will Sean Gunn return as Kraglin?

He is open to it. Asked by ComingSoon whether he would reprise Kraglin after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn replied, “If Marvel calls me about playing Kraglin again, I will answer the phone.” He said he feels close to the character, enjoys playing him and would like to explore Kraglin’s future if there is one in the Marvel Universe. ComingSoon published the interview on October 1, 2026.

That does not mean Marvel has cast him in an upcoming film or series. The comments establish Gunn’s willingness, not a project, schedule or official casting announcement. GamesRadar+ also reported his openness to playing Kraglin again on September 30, 2026.

What Gunn means by retiring from Rocket

Gunn’s “retirement” is specific to Rocket’s physical motion-reference performance. On set, he helped establish the character’s movements while working in a low, catcher-like crouch for long stretches and pivoting through his feet and ankles. He said he expected Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to be his last time putting on the knee pads for Rocket. Bradley Cooper provides Rocket’s voice; Gunn’s motion-reference work is a separate part of the character’s performance. The Los Angeles Times described the physical work and the distinction between the two performers.

Where Kraglin fits in the MCU

Kraglin Obfonteri is a Ravager who appears in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and other MCU stories. The Los Angeles Times lists Gunn’s appearances as Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At the end of the third Guardians film, Kraglin is part of Rocket’s team, giving Gunn a clear reason to say he would be interested in continuing the character’s story.
