The backlash over ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR concerns how Steam preorder buyers were meant to access the bonus—not whether the older game exists. Bandai Namco apologized for not clearly explaining that it would be accessed through ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, citing licensing restrictions and platform-related considerations. The ACE COMBAT Team says it is exploring a standalone Steam app, but has not confirmed that change or provided a date.
What triggered the backlash?
ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR was offered as a preorder bonus with ACE COMBAT 8. Some PC buyers understood the bonus to mean a separate Steam application. Instead, the reported arrangement made the older game available through ACE COMBAT 8, requiring players to access it via the newer title.
Players objected to the mismatch between the standalone-app expectation and the way the bonus was delivered. PC Gamer also reported complaints about having to install and launch ACE COMBAT 8, perceived differences from console versions, and the installation burden. One reviewer wrote, “You need to install 140gb of data to play a 3gb 20 years old game.” That is an individual player’s complaint reproduced by PC Gamer, not an independently verified measurement of the game’s general storage requirements. PC Gamer’s report also describes reported differences in achievements or trophies and cloud saves; those are secondary-reporting claims, not evidence that one platform is universally better.
Why was the bonus distributed through Ace Combat 8?
In the apology quoted by Operation Sports, Bandai Namco said licensing restrictions and platform-related considerations prevented the then-current release of ACE COMBAT ZERO as a standalone Steam application. The company said it had therefore made the game available through ACE COMBAT 8 and apologized for not clearly communicating that distribution method in advance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The explanation addresses why the Steam bonus was delivered in that form, but it does not erase the communication problem the publisher acknowledged: buyers had not been clearly told in advance how they would access it.
Is a standalone Steam version confirmed?
No. The latest official update says the ACE COMBAT Team has continued discussions with platform partners and other relevant parties and is evaluating a change in distribution. Its wording is exploratory: “Rather than accessing the title through ACE COMBAT™ 8: WINGS OF THEVE, we are exploring the possibility of making ACE COMBAT ZERO available as a standalone application on Steam.” The ACE COMBAT Team’s Steam community update says implementation details and timing remain under review. The team says it will provide another update when details are finalized, including whether the approach can be realized.

That is not a confirmed fix or a release promise. The update gives no date and does not guarantee that a standalone Steam app will be made available.
How does the situation differ by platform?
The reported dispute is specifically about Steam distribution. The current official statement discusses the possibility of a standalone Steam application; the reported player complaints include perceived differences from console versions. The available reporting also identifies differences involving achievements or trophies and cloud saves, but does not establish that these apply uniformly to every platform or edition.

Bandai Namco’s official ACE COMBAT 8 page lists the game’s editions and platforms and describes ACE COMBAT ZERO as a preorder bonus. That listing does not establish that a purchase made now includes the bonus. Check the terms shown by the relevant platform store before buying; do not assume that a new purchase grants access to an earlier preorder offer.

For now, players have an official statement that a standalone Steam option is being considered, but no confirmed availability, implementation details, or timing. The open question is whether Bandai Namco can and will make that distribution change. Any change should be judged by a subsequent official update, not by the fact that it is under consideration.
