It does not change the real score. The phrase “spread betting” can also mean a distinct UK product in which a customer stakes money per point and can lose more than the original stake; that is different from a fixed-odds point-spread bet.
What is a point spread?
A point spread is a settlement handicap attached to a team or competitor. The favorite is usually listed with a minus sign and the underdog with a plus sign. For the wager calculation, subtract the spread from the favorite’s score or add it to the underdog’s. The side selected must have the better adjusted score to cover.
The handicap is only for settling the bet. It does not alter the score, give a team a real head start, or change the result of the match. A team can win the actual game but fail to cover, while the losing team can cover the spread.
How do point spreads work?
Take the final score, apply the listed handicap to the selected side, and compare the adjusted scores. DraftKings illustrates the calculation with Cleveland -5.5 against Orlando: if Cleveland wins 104–100, subtracting 5.5 from Cleveland produces an adjusted score of 98.5–100. Cleveland won the game but did not cover; Orlando +5.5 covered. This is an operator’s example, not a current line or a recommendation. DraftKings explains point-spread bets.

What does +5.5 or -5.5 mean?
With a -5.5 spread, the favorite must win by at least six points for a bet on it to cover. With +5.5, the underdog can lose by five points or fewer, or win outright, and still cover. Because the half-point prevents an adjusted tie, these lines cannot push on the spread itself.
What does it mean to cover the spread?
To cover is to finish ahead after the handicap is applied. A favorite at -5.5 covers only if it wins by more than 5.5 points; an underdog at +5.5 covers if it loses by less than 5.5 points or wins. Covering is not the same as winning the match.

What happens if a team wins but doesn’t cover?
The team wins the real game, but a bet on it loses if its margin is smaller than the required spread. In the Cleveland–Orlando example, Cleveland’s four-point win falls short of -5.5, so Cleveland does not cover even though it won. A bet on Orlando +5.5 covers.
What happens with a whole-number spread?
If the final adjusted scores are tied, the result may be a push, meaning the stake is returned rather than treated as a win or loss. For example, a favorite at -5 would push if it won by exactly five points. A half-point line avoids that tie on the spread.

Pushes and the treatment of overtime depend on the specific market and operator rules. Fanatics’ Tennessee house rules say a two-way whole-number spread pushes when adjusted scores tie, and that full-game and second-half bets include overtime unless stated otherwise. Those are provisions for that operator and jurisdiction, not universal rules. Fanatics’ Tennessee house rules.
How are odds different from the spread?
The spread describes the score adjustment used to decide whether the selection covers. The odds describe the price and potential payout for the wager. A spread is not a prediction that a team will win by precisely that margin, nor does it guarantee balanced betting on both sides.

In UK sports wagering, “spread betting” may refer to a stake-per-point product rather than a fixed-odds point handicap. A firm quotes a spread, and the customer chooses an amount to stake for each point above or below that quote. The eventual result depends on how far the outcome falls from the quoted range or figure.

HM Revenue & Customs describes total bets, such as a team’s runs; supremacy bets, based on a margin of victory; and index bets for outcomes not captured by a simple score. Its example quotes England’s first-innings total against Australia in cricket at 280–300 runs. In this product, the stake is not a cap on possible loss: a result far from the quote can produce losses many times the original stake. HMRC’s spread-betting guidance was published in 2016 and updated on 21 July 2021; it is tax guidance, not current regulatory advice.
Rules are operator- and jurisdiction-specific. For example, Spreadex Limited’s sports spread-betting rules are effective 13 April 2026 and identify its sports rules, customer agreement, and sport-specific rules as governing its bets; the document identifies Spreadex as authorised and regulated by the FCA. How do spreads work in esports?
The same broad handicap idea can be applied to esports: a market might adjust a team’s score or another defined result, and the selection must cover after the adjustment. But the name alone does not tell you which match, map, period, or statistic is included. Each market’s terms define what counts, which official results or statistics are used, when a wager is void, and how cancellations or interruptions are handled.
The UK Gambling Commission says esports betting should be treated no differently from betting on another live event. This is UK regulatory guidance, not a promise that a particular game, event, or market is offered everywhere. Rules also differ by jurisdiction: Pennsylvania’s code, for example, requires proposed events and wager types to be submitted for approval before an operator accepts them. What to check before comparing spread bets
Two offers with similar-looking spreads may settle differently. Check the full market terms, not just the handicap and headline odds.
