Nicolas Cage reportedly said the Marvel Cinematic Universe is becoming a “well-funded and glorified WWE,” pointing to actors over 50 in superhero costumes and the films’ emphasis on fights. His remarks, made at Fan Expo Dallas, were framed as criticism delivered “with love”—and age was only part of his observation.
What did Nicolas Cage say about Marvel?
At Fan Expo Dallas, Cage reportedly said that some early MCU stories were terrific, then criticized what he sees in the franchise lately. The Guardian quoted him saying: “I do say this with love. When I see these 50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight – let’s face it, it’s all cutting to the fight – it’s hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE.” (The Guardian, 1 October 2026)
Was he blaming ageing actors?
Not age alone. Cage reportedly mentioned performers over 50 wearing superhero outfits, but his comparison also focused on the build-up to fights and what he sees as an emphasis on fight scenes. Describing the MCU as “well-funded” was part of the reported wording, too. The remarks are his subjective view, not a measured comparison between superhero films and professional wrestling.
Where and when did he make the remarks?
Both the Guardian and the Los Angeles Times reported on 1 October 2026 that Cage made the comments at Fan Expo Dallas. The Los Angeles Times also noted his earlier role as Johnny Blaze, or Ghost Rider, and his association with Spider-Noir, a Sony Spider-Man-related project—not an MCU production.
