This review discusses the critical assessment by Megan Garside of GamesRadar+; its praise and reservations reflect her judgment, not a consensus verdict.
Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode Carrie is not simply a scene-for-scene retelling of Stephen King’s novel. In Garside’s view, its social-media-era bullying and expanded cast make the story newly relevant, but the added plotlines also weaken the force of the climax. The result, as she sees it, is an ambitious adaptation with worthwhile ideas and uneven payoff.
Does Mike Flanagan’s Carrie bring something new to the story?
Garside’s answer is yes: the series places Carrie White’s torment in a world where humiliation can spread beyond a school hallway. She describes its bullying story as affecting a wider community, with an Instagram account serving as a contemporary means of harm. The review also notes that the series touches on school-system pressures, drug use and suicide; these are elements Garside says the show addresses, not evidence of any measured real-world effect.
The approach updates the context without discarding the story’s familiar landmarks. The bathroom scene and prom remain, while the adaptation gives more room to Carrie’s family and other characters. Samantha Sloyan’s Margaret, Carrie’s mother, is singled out as more complicated than in earlier portrayals. The series also follows bully Chris more closely, broadening the account of the people around Carrie rather than keeping the focus solely on her suffering.

How does the series depart from King’s novel?
The most consequential addition, in Garside’s account, is a subplot involving other women with telekinetic experiences. It raises a question that a straightforward retelling would not need to pursue: what if Carrie is not alone? Garside reads this thread as a possible foundation for continuing the story in later seasons, rather than treating the first season as a self-contained adaptation.
That expansion has a cost. The review says it wanted more attention to Carrie’s father and home life, and found the new subplot confusing. The added material therefore widens the series’ world without, in Garside’s judgment, giving every part of Carrie’s own story the same attention.

What works—and what does not—in the review’s verdict?
What Garside praises
- The social-media framing gives a familiar bullying story a contemporary dimension.
- The expanded supporting cast creates room to explore characters beyond Carrie, including Margaret and Chris.
- Flanagan’s willingness to move beyond a direct retelling gives the adaptation a distinct reason to exist.
What Garside criticizes
- The future-facing subplot competes with the central story and can be confusing.
- The prom is foreshadowed early enough to reduce the surprise Garside wanted from it.
- She finds the finale less intense than expected and Carrie’s revenge rushed.
Those criticisms shape the review’s mixed but favorable conclusion: Garside appreciates the ambition, yet thinks the material might have worked better as a limited series, with a more concentrated ending instead of an apparent launchpad for further seasons.
How does it compare with the 1976 and 2013 adaptations?
Garside uses Brian De Palma’s 1976 film and the 2013 Chloe Moretz adaptation as reference points, not as entries in a formal ranking. She says the 1976 film still holds up and that she has a soft spot for the 2013 version. Her case for another adaptation is that the surrounding world has changed enough to make a new interpretation legible—not that the earlier films have been made obsolete.

The key distinction is format and scope. Flanagan’s version has eight episodes in which to expand supporting characters and introduce new mythology; the review’s concern is that this extra room can dilute the prom’s suspense and the revenge’s catharsis. A viewer choosing among these versions may want to consider whether they prefer a feature-length telling or a serialized expansion, as well as how much they value the social-media framing, changes to the plot and the handling of the prom sequence. Garside does not offer a formal ranking.
