Google Reveals a Conveyor-Belt Keyboard That Brings the Keys to You

Google Japan has unveiled Gboard Kurukuru Version, a DIY physical keyboard concept that moves keys on conveyor belts so a typist can wait for a character to pass beneath a finger. Google designed it with one-handed or single-finger input in mind, but it is not a retail product, and no published tests show that it is faster, more comfortable, or more productive than a conventional keyboard.

What is Google’s conveyor-belt keyboard?

Gboard Kurukuru Version is a physical keyboard concept announced by Google Japan on October 1, 2026. Instead of keeping keys fixed while a user reaches across a layout, it moves keys toward the user on belts. Google’s announcement describes the idea succinctly: “キーボードの方が動けばよいのです。”—“The keyboard should move instead.” Google’s announcement introduces it as a DIY project, not a new Gboard app feature or a finished commercial keyboard.

How does the moving-key design work?

Each belt carries 29 keys. To enter a character, the user waits for that key to travel beneath a fingertip and times a press. Google says the arrangement can enter uppercase and lowercase characters directly. The central change is mechanical: the keys move, so the user does not have to reach across a stationary layout to find each one.

Google presents one-handed or single-finger typing as the design goal and suggests that two units could be used for two-handed operation. Those are intended use cases, not demonstrated performance outcomes: Google has published no comparative typing-speed, comfort, ergonomic, or productivity results for the concept.

Can you buy it, or build one?

Google says it has no plans to sell the keyboard. It has released open-source project plans, however, and its build guide provides instructions for the motorized Moving Keys Edition. The guide lists a separate Bluetooth Connection Edition as “Coming soon”; that status is not the same as a currently documented build. The Google / mozc-devices project guide is the place to consult for the available build details.

The guide’s bill of materials describes a substantial DIY assembly rather than a ready-to-use keyboard. It specifies:

Is it an alternative to a normal keyboard?

Not on the evidence available. A conventional keyboard keeps its keys fixed and is a widely available finished product; Kurukuru moves keys and is presented through DIY plans. Its design may interest people exploring one-finger input or unusual keyboard mechanisms, but the moving layout also asks the user to time presses as characters arrive. Without published trials, it is not possible to say whether that trade-off makes typing easier or more effective.
