The PlayStation set has a confirmed general release date of October 4; the two announced Pokémon sets are due October 1. The Poké Ball is the strongest match for a substantial retro Pokémon display, but official sources disagree on its piece count.

LEGO PlayStation 72306: best for a console display
For a video-game collector, PlayStation 72306 is the clearest pick of the month. The LEGO Group describes it as a near 1:1 model of the original PlayStation console and its first controller. The build has 1,911 pieces and is intended for ages 18 and up. LEGO’s product listing gives dimensions of over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep, so allow for a footprint roughly the size of a small display object rather than a miniature desk trinket.
Two buttons on the model—the Open and Power buttons—function, and the console conceals buildable scenes inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. Those details make it more than a plain console-shaped ornament, especially for fans who recognize the games. The LEGO Group’s official announcement calls it a model that “celebrates the console that helped shape a generation of play.”

Which LEGO Pokémon set is the best retro display pick?
Poké Ball 72154: the larger display option
If “retro Pokémon kit” means a substantial nostalgic display build, Iconic Trainer Moments Poké Ball 72154 is the stronger match. It is presented as an adult display set and is announced for October 1, 2026. Its announced suggested prices are £229.99, €259.99 and $299.99. That makes it a higher-priced option than the PlayStation set in each of the listed currencies, though actual local prices and promotions can differ.

There is an important specification conflict: the joint LEGO Group and The Pokémon Company International announcement gives the set 2,339 pieces, while the official LEGO Shop GB page gives 2,386. Neither figure should be treated as settled until LEGO’s regional listing is clarified. See the [Pokémon collaboration announcement](https://www.lego.com/en-us/aboutus/news/2026/july/lego-pokemon) and [UK Poké Ball listing](https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/iconic-trainer-moments-pokeball-72154) for the differing official information.
Up-Scaled Red 40868: a character-focused alternative
The other October Pokémon release is Up-Scaled Red Minifigure 40868. It has 930 pieces, is rated for ages 10 and up, and is announced for October 1. The LEGO Group’s stated prices are £69.99, €79.99 and $79.99. It is the lower-priced Pokémon option in the announcement, but it is a different format: a character build rather than the Poké Ball display model. The same [official announcement](https://www.lego.com/en-us/aboutus/news/2026/july/lego-pokemon) covers both Pokémon sets.

How to choose between the October releases
- Choose PlayStation 72306 if you want a recognizable original-console replica, have space for its stated footprint, and value the functional buttons and hidden game references.
- Choose Poké Ball 72154 if the priority is a larger Pokémon-themed display and the local price and listing details work for you; verify the piece count on your regional LEGO page because official sources conflict.
- Choose Up-Scaled Red 40868 if you would rather build a character and want the lower announced price of the two Pokémon options.
- Check local release and stock information before planning a purchase. The dates and prices are manufacturer announcements for launch markets, not confirmation that every retailer or region will have stock on the same day.
There is no independent comparative test or ranking established for these releases, so “best” depends on the franchise and display format you care about. For a classic console centerpiece, PlayStation is the supported recommendation; for a sizeable retro Pokémon display, the Poké Ball is the closer fit.
