What are Minecraft’s Ice Caves?
Ice Caves are a new cave biome revealed for the upcoming 2026 game drop. Mojang describes them as generating below colder biomes in the Overworld. The September 30, 2026 Bedrock Preview changelog confirms the biome can be explored experimentally in Bedrock Preview 26.60.29, but does not confirm availability in the standard release. Mojang’s Minecraft Live September 2026 recap also presents Ice Caves as part of the upcoming drop.
The biome is built mainly from Packed Ice and Calcite. Icicles hang from the ceiling, and large Packed Ice icicles can appear on both the floor and ceiling. Snow patches may also generate. Ore appears in pockets of Stone and Deepslate, while Dirt, Granite, and Glow Lichen do not generate in Ice Caves. The specific generation details are from the experimental Bedrock changelog and may change.
Ice Crystals light the caves
Ice Crystals are crystal-like blocks resembling Amethyst Clusters. In the preview, they can generate on Packed Ice, emit light, and be placed in any direction. They break if the block supporting them is removed. Because Glow Lichen is absent, Ice Crystals are the only light source the changelog identifies for the biome. Mojang notes that their size is currently smaller than intended, so their preview appearance is not necessarily final.

What is Frostbite, and how does freezing work?
Frostbite is a new zombie variant that can spawn in cold or icy biomes. It attacks at close range with melee strikes that apply the Freezing effect, and throws Ice Balls when fighting from a distance. Zombies and Husks that enter Powder Snow transform into Frostbites, according to the preview notes.
Frostbites are immune to freezing and are not slowed by either the Freezing effect or Powder Snow. Ice Balls break on impact and deal 4 damage to entities in the preview; damage scales down with the projectile’s velocity. Mobs vulnerable to freezing take five times the damage from it, another experimental combat value that could change before release.

The preview changelog also describes Ice Balls as an ingredient for brewing Lingering Potion, Splashing Potion, and Potion of Freezing. Arrows dipped into a cauldron filled with Potion of Freezing can become Arrows of Freezing. These mechanics are documented for the experimental build, not guaranteed final-release behavior.
Where to find Ice Caves
Look beneath colder Overworld biomes rather than on the surface: that is the location specified in Mojang’s Bedrock Preview changelog. The notes do not provide a precise biome list, coordinates, or a guarantee about how frequently Ice Caves generate, so there is no confirmed universal seed or coordinate to follow. If one does not appear below a cold region in a test world, the experimental generation may differ or the biome may not have generated nearby.

How to test the new features
Mojang’s testing guide gives separate routes for Java and Bedrock. The guide is published on Mojang’s Korean-language site; the access options below reflect its platform guidance, but menu labels can differ by platform or locale.
Java Edition: enable snapshots
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to the Installations tab.
- Enable snapshots in the launcher’s installation settings, then create or select a snapshot installation when available.
- Launch the snapshot using a separate test world or save location rather than your main world.
Bedrock Edition: use Preview or Beta
- Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS: Mojang’s guide identifies Minecraft Preview as the testing route.
- Android: the guide identifies the Minecraft Beta available through Google Play.
The specific Ice Cave changelog is for Bedrock Preview 26.60.29. Java players access experimental features through snapshots, but the cited sources do not confirm that an equivalent Java snapshot contains the same Ice Cave implementation at the same time.

Protect your worlds before testing
Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds. Back up any world you care about or use a different save folder for testing. Eligible players with an active Realms subscription can create a free testing Realm, but Realms is an optional route described by Mojang, not a requirement for trying preview features.

That is not established by the cited official sources. Mojang’s September 30, 2026 changelog confirms experimental Bedrock Preview access, while the Minecraft Live recap describes Ice Caves as a feature of an upcoming drop. Neither source gives a final standard-release date or guarantees that preview mechanics will remain unchanged. Treat the biome, Frostbite behavior, and freezing mechanics as experimental until Mojang publishes release notes confirming them.
