2026 Grand Final

Fremantle Should Stay Calm After Its Grand Final Loss—but “Drama-Free” Recruiting Needs a Clear Standard

Fremantle should resist making a rushed list decision in the aftermath of its seven-point grand final loss. But “only recruit players who are free from drama” is an opinion-column headline, not a verified club policy—and the accessible column does not establish what “drama” means or identify the players behind the argument.

What happened in the 2026 grand final

Brisbane beat Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) at the MCG, winning by seven points. Fremantle had led by 17 points with less than five minutes remaining before Brisbane kicked the final four goals. The result was a painful finish, but the score and late turnaround do not, by themselves, show what Fremantle should do with its playing list.

What “stay calm” means for the club

In ABC News reporting on 27 September 2026, coach Justin Longmuir urged players to support one another, avoid being too hard on themselves and take time before turning their attention to next season. He put the immediate response this way: “If we had’ve won, we would’ve won together. We lost, we lose together, so have each other’s back.”

That is a message about how the group should handle the loss, not a stated list-management plan. A measured response means separating the hurt of the final from decisions about contracts, recruiting and team balance. The grand final’s closing minutes may prompt review, but they are not enough on their own to prove that a particular kind of recruit is needed.

What the “free from drama” headline establishes—and what it doesn’t

The 3 October 2026 piece by Craig O’Donoghue in The West Australian is an opinion column. Its accessible page confirms the headline and opinion status, but subscriber access is required to read the article. The available text therefore does not establish how O’Donoghue defines “drama,” whether he proposes a measurable recruiting test, or which player examples support his argument.

That distinction matters: “free from drama” is subjective headline language, not a verified formal Fremantle policy. Without the full column, it would be misleading to attribute specific recruitment targets, incidents or selection criteria to its author—or to present the headline as the club’s position.

How to judge a recruit without turning a slogan into a rule

A more useful list discussion weighs several factors rather than treating an undefined label as a recruiting filter:

  • Role and list need: Identify what the team needs the player to do and whether that role fits the existing list.
  • Demonstrated performance: Assess what the player has shown on the field, rather than assuming one grand final result answers the question.
  • Availability: Consider whether the player is realistically available and able to contribute.
  • Publicly evidenced conduct: Base concerns on substantiated, relevant information—not rumour or a vague impression of being “dramatic.”

Those are sensible questions for any prospective recruit; the sources available here do not show that Fremantle has adopted them as an official test, or that the club has a formal “drama-free” requirement.

What Fremantle’s reported list profile adds

ABC News reported in 2026 that Fremantle ranked 13th in the league for experience measured by games played and had the league’s 11th-youngest list. Those figures provide context for discussion about list balance, but they are not an official recruiting rule. They do not prove that age should decide the club’s strategy, or that one kind of recruit would prevent a repeat of the grand final finish.
