In a video message after missing the ceremony, he apologized to teammates and said he could not wait to return to training with them next season.
Heeney tops the 2026 Bob Skilton Medal count
The Sydney Swans presented the Bob Skilton Medal at Sydney Town Hall on Thursday, October 1. The award is the club’s champion honor, often called its best and fairest. The Swans’ coaching panel votes on the medal, and Heeney finished ahead of Brodie Grundy and Charlie Curnow. Sydney Swans’ awards report records the totals as points; AFL coverage also reports the leading figures as votes.
| Place | Player | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Isaac Heeney | 431 |
| 2 | Brodie Grundy | 400 |
| 3 | Charlie Curnow | 398 |
| 4 | Chad Warner | 397 |
| 5 | Jai Serong | 352 |
| 6 | Callum Mills | 342 |
| 7 | Nick Blakey | 339 |
| 8 | Tom McCartin | 338 |
| 9 | Tom Papley | 304 |
| 10 | James Jordon | 301 |
The official club account says Heeney averaged 29 disposals and six clearances in those 20 games. AFL.com.au reports a different disposal average, 26.9 per game, alongside 6.2 clearances; the available reports do not explain the difference, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
A third consecutive medal
The 2026 win makes Heeney a three-time consecutive Bob Skilton Medal winner. AFL.com.au identifies his first victory as 2024, followed by the 2025 award and this year’s result. The club’s historical award-winners list also records his 2024 and 2025 medals.

Why Heeney missed awards night
Heeney did not attend the ceremony because the Swans had suspended him and four teammates—Nick Blakey, Riley Bice, James Jordon and Chad Warner—after round 23 for breaching the club’s behavioural standards, according to ABC News and AFL.com.au. The club kept the players eligible for awards because the votes had been cast during the season. Swans chair Andrew Pridham told ABC that removing votes retrospectively would not be appropriate and said the medals recognized on-field performance; eligibility, he said, was not an endorsement of conduct.
ABC separately reported a police investigation into an allegation of sexual assault connected to the same night as the late-night partying that preceded the club sanction. As of ABC’s October 1–2 report, no charges had been laid. ABC explicitly said it was not suggesting wrongdoing by the suspended players. The investigation and the club’s behavioural sanction are separate matters.

Heeney’s message: “I can’t wait to get back to training”
In a video message played at the awards, Heeney apologized to his club colleagues. He described every day away from the club as “heartbreaking,” saying he knew he could not contribute and kept thinking about what might have been.
He also looked ahead to the next season: “I’m incredibly excited about what this group can do. I can’t wait to get back to training with the boys, get better, and tackle next year together,” he said, in remarks published by AFL.com.au. That is his stated hope to rejoin training; it is not a report of medical clearance or a confirmed return date.
