1. Skribbl.io: draw and guess in a private room
Skribbl.io describes itself as “a free online multiplayer drawing and guessing pictionary game” on its official site. On a turn, one player draws a selected word while the others try to guess it; players earn points, and the site says the player with the most points at the end wins.
For friends playing remotely, the private-room option is the most relevant feature. The host can configure settings such as language, drawing time, number of rounds, game mode, word count, hints, and custom words. The site also lists kick, ban, mute, and report controls, which can help a host manage a room.
The site’s news section says custom rooms were increased to 20 players on 9 November 2022. That is a dated announcement, not confirmation of the current room limit, so check the room settings before planning around a particular group size. For a large gathering, review the available moderation and round settings before sharing the invite.

2. Gartic Phone: pass a sentence through drawings
Gartic Phone is not simply a standard drawing-and-guessing round. Its official instructions describe a chain: everyone writes a quirky sentence, players receive sentences to draw, and then describe a drawing before the group sees the results. As the chain moves from words to pictures and back, the final reveal shows how the original prompt changed.
The instructions recommend inviting friends to a voice call—for example, Discord or Zoom. That makes Gartic Phone a good fit when the group wants to talk and react together, rather than play quietly at separate paces. Agree on a call before starting, and explain the write-draw-describe sequence so newcomers know what to do.

3. Board Game Arena: browser-based tabletop variety
Board Game Arena says no download is necessary and that games can be played directly in a web browser. The service describes itself as free and supports playing with friends. Its two useful modes suit different schedules: real-time play for a coordinated game night, or turn-based play when players want to take turns at their own pace.
The displayed catalog includes games such as Wingspan and Terraforming Mars. Do not assume every catalog title has the same access conditions: the homepage’s general free-service claim does not spell out the rules for each game. Browse the current catalog and check the conditions for the particular title before arranging a session.

Why Colonist and Codenames Online are not firm picks here
Colonist and Codenames Online are plausible candidates for a list of browser games with friends, but the official pages available for review did not provide readable descriptive details. That leaves important practical questions unresolved: how the current game works, its free-access conditions, player limits, and how hosts create and share rooms.
Because those details matter when choosing a game for a group, they are not included as verified recommendations. Check each official site directly before relying on either option for a particular group size or setup.

- Pick Skribbl.io if your group wants quick, familiar drawing-and-guessing rounds with configurable private-room settings.
