In HLTV’s reported sample, the average single-map rating movement was 0.021; 9.4% of player-maps moved by at least 0.05, and 1% moved by at least 0.10.
Why HLTV updated Rating 3.0
HLTV says the update recalibrates its existing rating rather than introducing a separate rating version. It adds more CS2 match data and refreshes the statistical baselines behind the sub-ratings. The timing also reflects the economy changes Valve made in July 2025: according to HLTV, those changes made CS2 more CT-sided, while the previous averages included only a few months of play under the revised economy.
The stated aim is greater accuracy ahead of the 2026 HLTV Awards and Top 20 Players of the Year. That is HLTV’s description of its own system and rationale, not an independent finding that Rating 3.0 has been proven more accurate.
What changed in the calculation
More data and map context
HLTV’s win-probability data for Round Swing and eco-adjustment now includes CS2 games through September 29, 2026, with map-specific figures for Cache. The system can account for the fact that an identical 5v5 situation may have different win probabilities on different maps.

Map-specific data is not used when there are too few observations for a new map or an exact situation. In that case, HLTV falls back to global averages for that round. The selection is made per round, so a round does not switch from map-specific to global probabilities partway through. HLTV identifies Cache as the map most affected by adding map-specific data.
Updated baselines
HLTV recalculated the averages and standard deviations for all sub-ratings using LAN CS2 games through September 29, 2026. These baselines affect how performance is normalized within the rating system.

Revised Round Swing rules
Round Swing estimates how a player’s actions affect a team’s chance of winning a round. HLTV changed its handling of late-round kills and round-end credit:
- Kills do not contribute to Round Swing when fewer than 10 seconds remain on the bomb, or fewer than 5 seconds remain when the CTs have a defuse kit, unless a CT is actively defusing.
- In rounds with a bomb plant, only kills after the plant count when excess swing is distributed at round end.
- A kill cannot produce negative Round Swing. If an unusual case would otherwise lower the team’s win probability after a kill, HLTV assigns zero swing instead.
- Stand-ins no longer receive Round Swing for rounds they did not play.
HLTV says Inferno was most affected by the bomb-timer change, which it attributes to the map’s post-plant-heavy nature.

How much did historical ratings move?
HLTV reported the following results for its recalculation. These are figures from HLTV’s sample and calculations, not independently reproduced measurements:

The average change was small, but it does not describe every player-map: a minority crossed the larger thresholds, and the most affected example moved considerably more. HLTV’s report does not make that largest movement representative of the overall sample.

How to compare a player’s old and updated rating
For a useful before-and-after comparison, match the same player and the same event or map sample. Then separate the numerical movement from the calculation changes that could have affected it: the updated data, map context, or Round Swing rules. An isolated player-map example cannot show the distribution; HLTV’s average and threshold shares provide the broader context.
What HLTV says about the trade-off
In its report, bylined NER0cs, HLTV wrote: “Overall, though, we believe that this trade-off is worth it for greater accuracy ahead of the 2026 edition of the HLTV Awards and Top 20 Players of the Year.” This describes HLTV’s own assessment of the update.
