At a campaign rally in Lakeland, Florida, on October 1, 2026, Vice President JD Vance said state Rep. Angie Nixon “doesn’t belong in America” because she calls herself a socialist. Nixon answered that Florida is her home and said she is “not going any damn place.”
What did JD Vance say about Angie Nixon?
Vance made the remark while speaking at Lakeland Linder International Airport during a Florida campaign event for Republican candidates Byron Donalds and Ashley Moody. Florida Phoenix reported that he criticized Democratic statewide candidates David Jolly and Nixon, and tied his attack on Nixon to her self-description as a socialist and her joining the Democratic Socialists of America.
“When Angie Nixon calls herself a socialist, I think the right response is to say, ‘Then get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America,’” Vance said, according to Florida Phoenix. The report said hundreds attended and cheered. That describes the rally audience; it does not establish the scale of reaction beyond the event.
Vance also criticized Cafe Resistance Bookstore, which Nixon runs in Jacksonville. The reporting records his criticism but does not independently verify his characterization of the bookstore’s collection.

How did Angie Nixon respond?
Nixon responded in a written statement, invoking her family’s ties to the country and rejecting the suggestion that her political views made her un-American. “But this is my home,” she wrote. She added: “They can take their tech-bro cash and their weird, intrusive agenda somewhere else, because I’m not going any damn place.”
She also argued that wanting lower property insurance costs and healthcare for families is not un-American. In comments reported by WESH, Nixon said she was born and raised in the country and called Vance’s remark shameful and disrespectful. She described the personal weight of being told to leave: “The fact that they are trying to demonize me and tell me I need to leave the country, the very country that I was born and raised in, the very state, and knowing again that my ancestors helped build this country and so I also don’t even know where I’d go back to,”

What was the political context?
The Lakeland appearance was a campaign rally in Polk County ahead of the November 2026 midterms. Florida Phoenix reported that Vance described Florida as “MAGA country” and used the event to argue against Nixon’s candidacy. His explanation for the “doesn’t belong” line was explicitly political: he linked it to her identifying as a socialist. That was his campaign rhetoric, not a factual test of who belongs in the country.

The available reports establish Nixon’s response and the words exchanged at the rally. They do not measure how many people beyond the rally criticized Vance or whether online reaction was broad or representative. The headline phrase “critics fire back” should therefore not be read as evidence of a quantified public backlash.
