Chandler Simpson was reported ready for the Tampa Bay Rays’ American League Division Series against the New York Yankees after testing his sore right foot in a scrimmage and taking part in the team’s Friday workout. That October 2 pre-series update established that he was available going into the opener—not that he started Game 1 or played later in the series.
Why Simpson’s right foot was a concern
Simpson fouled a ball off the top of his right foot during the Rays’ September 25 game in Philadelphia. The team said he had general soreness for several days and received treatment. CBS Sports reported that he had been held out of Tampa Bay’s final couple of regular-season games while dealing with the soreness.
How he tested the foot before the ALDS
During a Thursday scrimmage, Simpson tested the foot by dropping a bunt, running at full speed and going from first to third. He also participated in Friday’s workout ahead of Game 1. Manager Kevin Cash said of his scrimmage, “He looked like Chandler.”
What Simpson and the Rays said about his status
The Rays’ October 2 report said Simpson was not concerned the foot would be an issue moving forward. Simpson said, “Felt great,” then added, “We’re all good to go.” CBS Sports separately reported that Cash said Friday Simpson was good to go for the ALDS against the Yankees.

What the readiness report does—and does not—confirm
The available reports support a specific conclusion: Simpson was described as ready before the series opener after participating in baseball activities. They do not establish that he was in the Game 1 starting lineup, document a formal ALDS roster transaction or report his subsequent participation during the series.
Simpson’s reported 2026 numbers
CBS Sports reported that Simpson’s 2026 line was .306/.333/.356 with 46 stolen bases. Those figures are attributed here to CBS Sports; the available reporting does not identify an original statistical source for independent verification.
