Tom Kim won the men’s individual golf gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan on October 3, 2026, finishing at 18-under 262 after a final-round 64. The Asian Tour reports he won by three strokes.
How Tom Kim won the gold medal
Kim, also known as Kim Joo-hyung, closed the 72-hole stroke-play event with a six-under-par 64. His total was 18-under 262, and the Asian Tour described his victory as a three-stroke win. The Associated Press reported his final-round score and total; the Asian Tour reported the margin.
Kim said he tried to focus on his game rather than the pressure. Yonhap quoted him saying, “I tried to maintain that mindset throughout and just play my game.” Yonhap also identifies him as Kim Joo-hyung.
Men’s individual golf medal results
According to the Associated Press, Japan’s Kazuki Higa won silver after a playoff, and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana took bronze. The reported three-stroke gap was between Kim and the players behind him; Higa’s silver was decided in the playoff.

South Korea did not win the team event
Kim’s individual gold was separate from the men’s team competition. The Associated Press reports that China won team gold, South Korea took silver, and Japan earned bronze. Teams had three players, with their best two scores counting each day; the individual event was decided by each golfer’s 72-hole stroke-play total.
What the gold means for Kim’s military service
The Associated Press reports that Kim’s individual gold qualifies him for an exemption from South Korean military service. The same report says most able-bodied men in South Korea serve about 18 months. Those are AP’s descriptions of the policy; the exemption’s legal basis and eligibility process are not established here by an official government or legal source, so the result should not be taken as a general rule about every medal or athlete.
