Jake Oettinger stopped 20 of 22 shots in Dallas’s 4–0 season-opening loss to St. Louis on Oct. 2, 2026. The Blues scored twice with Oettinger in net, then added two empty-net goals after Dallas pulled him late. Joel Hofer made 25 saves for St. Louis’s shutout.
Why the final was 4–0 despite Oettinger’s 20 saves
The shot total and the final score count different things: Oettinger faced 22 shots while guarding Dallas’s net and stopped 20. The other two goals came after the Stars pulled their goalie, leaving the net empty. NHL.com’s game recap records the empty-net goals by Jimmy Snuggerud and Pius Suter at 17:37 and 17:52 of the third period, just 15 seconds apart.
Before those late goals, Mason McTavish opened the scoring 1:34 into the first period, converting after Colton Parayko’s shot produced a rebound. Dalibor Dvorsky made it 2–0 at 13:05 of the second after a defensive breakdown. That left Dallas chasing the game and ultimately pulling Oettinger, rather than asking him to stop the two empty-net attempts.
Where the game turned
An early rebound goal
McTavish put St. Louis ahead early by reaching the rebound after Oettinger stopped Parayko’s shot. The Blues had the lead less than two minutes into the opener at American Airlines Center.

A costly second-period sequence
On Dvorsky’s goal, Oettinger left the puck for Nils Lundkvist, but Pius Suter beat Lundkvist to it and found Philip Broberg in front. As Oettinger recovered, he tripped over teammate Roope Hintz, leaving Dvorsky an open net. The NHL recap describes the sequence; the Stars’ official postgame account also characterized the collision as unlucky and the play as a mid-game mistake.
A disallowed goal and empty-net finish
Adam Jiricek appeared to add a third-period power-play goal, but Dallas successfully challenged the play for offside and the goal was overturned. Later, with the Stars pressing without a goalie, Snuggerud and Suter scored the two empty-netters that made the final 4–0.

Dallas’s scoring support and power play
“Gets no help” captures the lack of scoring support Oettinger received, but it is not the whole account of the loss. Dallas did not score, Hofer stopped all 25 shots he faced, and the Stars’ official recap pointed to a clunky start, the second-period mistake and an unproductive power play.
Forward Tyler Seguin described the game’s feel in the team’s postgame account: “In a way, it almost felt like preseason.” He added, “The game flow fell and penalties ruined the flow.” That is Seguin’s impression, not a statistical description of the game.

Hofer, meanwhile, credited St. Louis’s defensive effort after earning the shutout: “We’re obviously very dynamic and can make very good plays, but we were up to the test tonight. We were very tight on them and didn’t give them much, so kudos to our guys.”

RotoWire reported that Oettinger missed preseason with a lower-body injury and was cleared to play on the Wednesday before the Oct. 2 opener. He did play against St. Louis. RotoWire projected a starter’s workload for him in 2026–27, but that was an outlook rather than a confirmed schedule or guarantee; the report also identified Casey DeSmith as a capable backup.
