Nick Foligno scored the opening goal as Minnesota beat Nashville 3-1 in the season opener for both teams on October 1, 2026. His first-period wrist shot put the Wild ahead, while Blake Coleman scored the game winner in his Minnesota debut.
How Foligno put Minnesota ahead
At 9:35 of the first period at Bridgestone Arena, a rebound sequence gave Foligno a chance in the high slot. Michael McCarron’s shot produced the rebound, and Nashville forward Matthew Wood slowed it as he dove. Foligno gathered the puck and beat Juuse Saros with a glove-side wrist shot, making it 1-0.
It was the game’s first goal, not the game winner. Coleman extended Minnesota’s lead on a power play at 13:48 of the first period, and that goal stood as the winner.
How the 3-1 result took shape
Coleman’s power-play goal made it 2-0 before the first intermission. Kirill Kaprizov added Minnesota’s third goal in the third period, while Roman Josi scored Nashville’s lone goal. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 19 shots for the Wild; Saros made 27 saves for the Predators.

Foligno’s return-season context
Minnesota acquired Foligno from Chicago at the March 6, 2026 trade deadline. He had four points—one goal and three assists—in 17 games with the Wild after the trade during the previous season, and the team described him as a regular on the penalty kill. In its September 30 season preview, Minnesota called 2026-27 a possible 20th and final season for Foligno; it did not report a confirmed retirement decision.
In that preview, Foligno explained his choice to return: “I kept coming to the realization that I wanted to (return). I felt like there was unfinished business and I had such a great time playing here I wanted to experience it in full.”
