Vancouver and Edmonton opened the 2026–27 NHL season with a two-game home-and-home—and delivered two high-scoring games with opposite winners. The Canucks took the September 29 opener 6–5 in overtime; the Oilers answered with a 9–7 win in Vancouver on October 1, splitting the set.
Canucks vs. Oilers opening-night results
| Date and venue | Result | Game story |
|---|---|---|
| September 29, 2026 — Rogers Place, Edmonton | Vancouver 6, Edmonton 5 (OT) | Paul Cotter scored Vancouver’s opening goal and the overtime winner. It was Manny Malhotra’s first NHL win as a head coach. |
| October 1, 2026 — Rogers Arena, Vancouver | Edmonton 9, Vancouver 7 | The Oilers built a substantial lead, then held on as Vancouver pushed late. Connor McDavid had one goal and four assists; Leon Draisaitl scored twice and added an assist. |
The teams therefore split their season-opening home-and-home. The first game turned on Vancouver’s overtime finish; the second was another goal-heavy contest, but Edmonton stayed ahead despite the Canucks’ late rally. Edmonton’s October 2 recap records the second result and the two Oilers’ point totals.
What “repeat opening night” meant for the Canucks home opener
Vancouver’s October 1 home opener followed the first game in Edmonton by two days. The Canucks announced a 7:00 p.m. start and planned fan activities before puck drop, including Live at RBC Landing from 5:00 p.m. The club’s pre-event announcement listed live music, interactive games, alumni autograph sessions, Canucks Dance Team performances, face painting, colouring stations, and a retail trailer. It also said the team would introduce the 2026–27 roster and coaching staff and show a new opening video.
The announcement promised a limited-edition RBC jersey blanket to the first 10,000 fans through the doors. That was a promotion for this past event, not an offer available for a future game. The release also advertised an RBC cardholder concession cash-back offer and an estimated 50/50 jackpot; both were event-specific claims made before the game. The Canucks’ home-opener announcement describes what was planned.

Why the two games made a natural opening-night double feature
The NHL said the 2026–27 meeting was the clubs’ eighth mutual season-opening game. Its season overview placed Canucks at Oilers in the September 29 Sportsnet doubleheader in Canada, alongside a separate ESPN tripleheader in the United States. Those network references do not establish carriage or streaming availability in every market. The NHL’s season overview provides that opening-slate context.
For the October 1 game, Vancouver’s notes listed Sportsnet Pacific and Sportsnet One on television and KiSS West Coast on radio. Those were listings for that specific game, not a standing guide for later meetings. The Canucks’ October 1 game notes contain the event-specific broadcast information.
