The distinction matters: the PS4 edition substantially reconstructed the game’s presentation, but Bluepoint’s technical account says it retained much of the original gameplay code.
What are the two rebuilds?
The two later versions are the PS3 remaster and the PS4 remake. The original PS2 release is the starting point, not one of the two rebuilds.

The original release date above is North American, not a worldwide date. Sony’s February 2017 announcement gave February 7, 2018 in its European context, while its North American launch post says February 6. The 2017 announcement provides the earlier regional date.
How did the PS3 remaster differ from the PS4 remake?
The 2011 PS3 collection
Sony’s announced features for The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection included full 1080p HD, improved frame rates, stereoscopic 3D graphics, 7.1 surround sound, bonus video content, dynamic themes and Trophy support. The 2018 PS4 remake
Bluepoint studio president Marco Thrush made the naming distinction explicit: “With Shadow of the Colossus we’re working on a remake — it’s not really a remaster. One, because we already did the remaster.” Sony’s interview with the team
The PS4 release also rebuilt the game’s visual presentation and added photo mode. For PS4 Pro, JAPAN Studio executive producer Yasutaka Asakura announced dynamic 4K resolution targeting 30 frames per second. That was a target in the 2017 announcement, not a measured performance result. PlayStation.Blog

These feature descriptions come from different launch materials, not from a controlled, side-by-side performance test, so they should not be read as a direct benchmark of the two editions.
Was the PS4 version made entirely from scratch?
No. Bluepoint technical director Peter Dalton’s GDC presentation describes a more layered process. The team selected the PS3 remaster as the starting base, ran parity tests against the PS2 and PS3 versions, and used the original Shadow of the Colossus code for most gameplay. Bluepoint’s engine handled core systems and visual work including world geometry, particles and lighting. That makes “remake” apt for the substantial reconstruction, but does not mean every gameplay system was recreated from nothing. Dalton’s GDC presentation

Dalton also described an incremental workflow: establish a working retail build, rebuild binaries for the original target, test parity, then upgrade and port in controlled stages. He noted that missing gameplay code can be especially costly to reverse engineer, while source art and tool pipelines can help without always being essential. Those are general observations about Bluepoint’s process, rather than claims unique to this game.

Controls were one area the team considered. Lowe said Bluepoint wanted them to feel more comparable to later PlayStation games, but the team kept distinctive behavior such as Wander standing still to shoot his bow and his heavy movement. Visual and control decisions were weighed against whether they supported the game’s intended feel; this was not a commitment to make every action identical to the PS2 version.
The remake also gave Bluepoint an opportunity to correct some problems that became apparent after the PS3 version’s frame-rate increase. Thrush cited a bug that made the third colossus harder as one example. That does not establish that every issue with the PS3 edition was corrected.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose the PS4 remake if you want the substantially rebuilt presentation, photo mode or the most recent of these editions. Sony’s product page says it is playable on PS5, with some PS4 features potentially absent; it does not specify which features differ. PlayStation’s product page
- Choose the PS3 collection if you want the 2011 remaster or want ICO alongside it in the same collection. Its listed technical features are the ones Sony announced for that release, rather than a guarantee of a particular display or performance result on every setup.
- Choose the PS2 original if you specifically want the original release rather than either later version.
Sony’s official materials reviewed here do not provide a verified sales total, player count or neutral comparative benchmark for these editions.
