Astridr’s character model in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was shaped by Ninja Theory Senior Character Artist Gabriel Dias Maia, who contributed across nearly every part of the work, from high-poly sculpting and texturing to hair and in-engine look development. The documented toolset includes ZBrush, Maya, Substance 3D Painter, and Unreal Engine 5; Icelandic actress Aldís Amah Hamilton provided Astridr’s performance and likeness.
Who worked on Astridr’s character model?
In an October 3, 2026 feature, 80 Level identifies Gabriel Dias Maia as Ninja Theory’s Senior Character Artist and says he played a key role in Astridr’s model. His contribution extended across nearly every part of the character work, including the high-poly sculpt, texturing, hair, and look development in the game engine. The credit describes a broad contribution, not sole authorship.
Marco Teixeira handled Astridr’s concept art, while Dan Crossland was the game’s Character Director. These are distinct roles: concept art informs a character’s visual direction, character art builds the game-ready visual asset, and a character director oversees character work across the game.
Which software was used?
The feature names four tools in connection with the work: ZBrush, Maya, Substance 3D Painter, and Unreal Engine 5. It does not specify which program handled each individual stage, nor does it publish settings, technical specifications, texture-map details, or a step-by-step pipeline. It is therefore accurate to describe these as the named software in the workflow, but not to assign a particular sculpting, grooming, texturing, or rendering task to a specific application beyond the stages Maia is credited with.

Whose likeness does Astridr use?
Icelandic actress Aldís Amah Hamilton provided Astridr’s performance and likeness. The model is therefore tied to Hamilton’s contribution as performer; she should not be confused with Melina Juergens, who performs Senua.
The 80 Level feature shows renders of Astridr with and without war paint, offering a direct visual comparison of the character’s appearance. It does not explain how the paint was authored, how her hair was groomed, what maps were used, or how the model was rigged, so those details cannot be inferred from the images alone.

How does Astridr’s model fit into Hellblade II’s production?
Performance capture was a major part of Hellblade II overall, but published game-wide figures do not describe Astridr’s individual sessions or model pipeline. In a May 16, 2024 Xbox Wire feature, Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews said, “We see performance capture as a tool to deliver character performance in the purest way possible.” Xbox Wire reported that nearly all in-game movement was performed by real-world actors and scanned, and that combat sequences alone took almost 70 full days to capture. That is a production-wide combat-capture figure, not a count of Astridr’s capture days.
A Creative Bloq interview published August 21, 2024 discusses the game’s broader cinematic visual direction, Unreal Engine 5, and photogrammetry. VFX director Mark Slater-Tunstill said, “From the outset we wanted to make it look filmic,” and described the emphasis on technology serving a believable world. Those comments concern the game’s overall visual production; they do not establish a specific photogrammetry or other technical process for Astridr’s model.
