Golden State beat Dallas 77–73 in the deciding Game 3 of their first-round series, coming back from a 16-point deficit to reach the WNBA semifinals. Gabby Williams scored 19 points and hit the go-ahead 17-footer with 1:17 left. The win showed how far the Valkyries could get with defensive pressure, rebounding and composure; against the Las Vegas Aces, the harder question is whether they can pair that grit with reliable offense.
How Golden State turned a 16-point deficit into a series win
The Associated Press recap hosted by the WNBA records the decisive facts: a 77–73 victory in Game 3, a comeback from 16 down, and Williams’s 19 points. Her 17-foot shot with 1:17 remaining put Golden State ahead. A late replay review also went the Valkyries’ way, and the win sent them through to face Las Vegas.
The score tells the result; the comeback explains why Kurtenbach framed it as a test of grit. In his commentary, Golden State endured an extended scoring drought before assembling a 14–0 run, then had to defend its slim late lead. He also describes Williams securing a key inbounds rebound and making four free throws. Those sequence details are part of Kurtenbach’s account, while the AP recap independently confirms the final score, comeback, Williams’s scoring and go-ahead basket, review and advancement.
What “grit is the winning formula” means—and what it does not
Kurtenbach’s point is that Golden State found ways to win when its half-court offense stalled: pressure on defense, effort plays and persistence helped keep the team alive long enough to make the late shots and stops that mattered. That is a reading of this game, not proof that grit by itself is a repeatable winning formula or a measured cause of the result.

The same distinction matters for the next round. A comeback in one elimination game shows that the Valkyries could recover from a deep hole against Dallas; it does not establish that their offense will be dependable whenever a possession slows down. Kurtenbach’s concern is precisely that the defensive effort may not be enough if Golden State cannot find reliable scoring late in the clock.
Why the Aces are a different kind of test
Las Vegas is Golden State’s next opponent, as the WNBA-hosted AP recap confirms. Kurtenbach casts the Aces as the more exacting challenge: the Valkyries must try to sustain their defensive identity while also producing offense more consistently. That is a question raised by the matchup, not a prediction about who will win.

The format makes the task different from the Dallas finale. Under the WNBA’s 2026 playoff format, the first round is best-of-three and the semifinals are best-of-five. A longer series gives both teams more than one game to respond and adjust, so Golden State’s challenge is not simply to summon the same intensity for another night; it is to find ways to score and defend across a series.

The Dallas win gives the Valkyries a meaningful example of how defense, effort and composure can keep them in a game when scoring is difficult. The evidence supports that as an account of this particular victory. It does not establish that those traits alone will carry them past Las Vegas. The ultimate test in Kurtenbach’s framing is whether Golden State can keep making effort plays while finding more reliable answers on offense.
