The first evaluation happens at the start of Year 3, but missing the threshold then is not permanent—you can offer a Diamond at the shrine to request another evaluation.
When Grandpa evaluates your farm
Grandpa’s note says he will return at the start of the third year to assess your success. The shrine’s four candles show the result of an evaluation based on milestones from your first two years. The game frames this as a judgment of your progress, but there is no single required play style: points can come from several kinds of achievements.
Grandpa’s Letter opens with the line, “If you’re reading this, you must be in dire need of a change.” The evaluation gives that premise a practical outcome: milestones determine how many candles light.
How many points you need for four candles
The Stardew Valley Wiki lists 21 available evaluation points and these candle thresholds:
#1 Best Overall

| Evaluation points | Candles lit | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | 1 | Evaluation result |
| 4–7 | 2 | Evaluation result |
| 8–11 | 3 | Evaluation result |
| 12 or more | 4 | Qualifies for the Statue of Perfection |
You do not need all 21 points. The target is 12, so the useful question is which mix of milestones best fits the way you are already playing.
Where evaluation points come from
The scoring system rewards different kinds of farm and character progress. The listed categories include earnings, skill levels, achievements, relationships, keys, and Community Center progress. No one category—or goal such as getting married—is mandatory if you can reach 12 points through other milestones.

Earnings
The listed lifetime-earnings thresholds are 50,000g, 100,000g, 200,000g, 300,000g, 500,000g, and 1,000,000g. The first five thresholds are worth one point each; reaching 1,000,000g adds two points, for up to seven points from earnings. This makes income a substantial route, but it is not the only one.
Skills, achievements, and relationships
Skill-level milestones and achievements can add points alongside your earnings. Relationship progress is another scoring category, so time spent building friendships can contribute. The available source excerpt does not establish every subcondition or relationship threshold; use the linked scoring table rather than relying on an assumed exact heart level or achievement checklist.

Keys and Community Center progress
Obtaining the Skull Key and Rusty Key counts among the listed milestones. Community Center progress also matters: the scoring criteria include completing the Community Center and its ceremony. These exploration and restoration goals offer alternatives to concentrating solely on money or social progress.
Choose a route that suits your save
Because milestones span several play styles, plan around progress you can realistically make rather than trying to complete every category.

- Enjoy exploring? Pursue the Skull and Rusty Keys and contribute to Community Center completion.
- Spend time with villagers? Relationship progress can help, but it is one option among several rather than a requirement.
- Already past Year 3? Check the shrine and use the re-evaluation option if you still need the four-candle result.
The full point table can help you identify the shortest route from your current progress. The thresholds above explain the main choices, but do not treat the partial category details here as a complete checklist of every scoring condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to request another evaluation
- Go to Grandpa’s Shrine on your farm.
- Place a Diamond in the shrine to request another evaluation.
- Allow the game to load again; the evaluation may occur after a load or, in some cases, on the first day of the next season.
- When the result appears, check the candles. If all four are lit, interact with the shrine manually to collect the reward.
This lets you catch up after the first Year 3 assessment; the initial evaluation is not your only chance at the four-candle result.

The reward is the Statue of Perfection, which produces 2–8 Iridium Ore per day, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki. The shrine does not explicitly announce the reward, so interact with it after earning four candles rather than assuming it will appear automatically.
