A user reports that custom software split Qwen3.8-27B IQ4_XS prefill work between a 24 GB M4 Pro MacBook Pro and an iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the combined setup reaching 157 tokens per second at 16K context—44% above the Mac-only rate in that test. This is a single, self-reported benchmark, not an independently reproduced result, and it measures prompt processing rather than the speed of generating an answer.
What the reported 44% improvement measures
Prefill is the stage when a model processes the prompt before it begins producing a response. The reported 44% increase applies to that stage at a 16K context setting. It does not establish that the model generates answer tokens 44% faster, nor that an iPhone can generally be plugged in and used as an external GPU.
The experiment author, u/StayLameBro, published the figures on Reddit on October 2, 2026. Wccftech repeated them the following day, but its coverage is not an independent test. The available reports do not establish a controlled replication or sustained performance under prolonged thermal load. Read the author’s Reddit post and Wccftech’s report.
Reported prefill results by context length
The figures below are end-to-end rates reported by the experiment author for the stated setup. They are not typical-performance guarantees.

The 44% figure is the largest of these three reported comparisons, not a universal gain across context lengths. The author’s post includes a correction clarifying the end-to-end prefill rates; the table uses the corrected figures.
How the phone and Mac shared the workload
The reported test used a 24 GB M4 Pro MacBook Pro, an iPhone 17 Pro Max, Qwen3.8-27B in IQ4_XS quantization, custom software, and a 10 Gb/s USB-C cable. The author describes prefilling a 2,000-token file into a saved session.

For each 256-token batch, the Mac handled model layers 1–40 and streamed activations to the phone. The iPhone processed layers 41–64 while the Mac began the next batch. The author attributes the phone-side contribution to running those layers on its GPU. This describes that particular implementation; it does not demonstrate a general iPhone capability or compatibility with other inference software. It supports a narrow, setup-specific comparison
The reported rates compare Mac-only and split-device prefill for one model build, quantization, host memory configuration, phone, software implementation, cable, and test procedure. Changing any of these—including the model, context length, Mac memory, or phone—could change the result. The figures alone do not show whether another setup would benefit.

It does not establish faster answer generation
Prefill and decode are separate parts of inference. These measurements concern prompt processing; they provide no comparison of the rate at which the model generated subsequent answer tokens. They also do not establish an increase in maximum usable context length.
It is not independently verified
The numbers come from the experiment author, with secondary coverage repeating the report. No independent reproduction or controlled replication is established in the available accounts. The reports also do not establish how well the setup performs through prolonged thermal load.

What to check before trying a similar setup
- Confirm that the software you plan to use supports dividing this model’s work across the specific Mac and phone; the reported result used a custom implementation.
- Match comparisons by model, quantization, context length, and Mac memory configuration. A result at 16K context is not a direct prediction for a different workload.
- Measure prefill and answer-generation speed separately, and compare end-to-end rates under the same conditions.
- If using a wired connection, check that both devices and the cable support the required data connection. The author specified a 10 Gb/s USB-C cable; that cable rating alone does not ensure a speedup.
- Treat the reported gain as a result to verify on your own setup, not as a guaranteed benefit from connecting these devices.
