South Korean golfer Tom Kim—known in Korea as Kim Joo-hyung—won the men’s individual golf gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 3, 2026. Contemporary reports say South Korean athletes who have not already completed military duty become eligible for a military-service benefit after winning Asian Games gold. Kim’s result was an individual victory; South Korea won silver in the men’s team event.
Tom Kim’s individual gold carries the reported benefit
Kim finished the four-round individual tournament at 18-under 262, according to Yonhap News Agency. The Associated Press reported that he closed with a six-under 64 in the final round and won by three strokes over the golfers who played off for silver and bronze.
Yonhap and the AP report that Asian Games gold makes eligible South Korean athletes who have not already completed military duty eligible for the benefit. In this case, the trigger was Kim’s individual gold, not a Korean victory in the team competition.
Why South Korea’s team silver does not change the outcome
The individual and team competitions had separate results. Individual golf was a 72-hole stroke-play event. In the team competition, each country fielded three players and counted its best two scores each day. China won team gold, while South Korea took silver, the AP reported.

That distinction matters for Kim Seong-hyeon, known internationally as S.H. Kim: the AP reported that he did not receive the benefit from this event. South Korea’s team medal was silver, while Tom Kim’s personal gold met the Asian Games threshold described in the reports.
What the reported military-service rule says
The coverage describes a broader sports threshold: the AP says a medal of any color at the Olympics or gold at the Asian Games can qualify an athlete for the benefit. Yonhap likewise describes Asian Games gold as the relevant threshold for athletes who have not already completed military duty. Under that account, an Asian Games silver is not enough.

The reports use phrases such as “military-service exemption” and “benefit.” They do not provide the current statutory text or establish every administrative obligation that may apply to Kim. The exact legal mechanics and any remaining requirements therefore should not be inferred from the medal result alone.
The benefit can be significant to an athlete with an overseas professional career because military service could otherwise interrupt prime competitive years. Asked about reports of an exemption, Kim told Yonhap: “I did not pay any mind to reports (about my military service exemption).” He added that he had come “to represent the country, not to accomplish any personal goal.” To the AP, he said he was proud to bring a medal for his country and called the pressure he felt that week a “big stepping stone” for upcoming seasons.

A policy that remains debated
The AP reported that the system was created more than 50 years ago and that some people in South Korea question its fairness. In 2018, Yonhap reported that Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon asked officials to consider possible improvements amid criticism. That report documents a request for review at the time; it does not establish that reforms were enacted or explain the rules in force in 2026.
Yonhap’s 2023 coverage of the Hangzhou Asian Games also described Asian Games gold as carrying the benefit for South Korean male athletes and cited footballer Lee Kang-in as a recipient. That earlier case offers context, but it does not determine the administrative details of Kim’s case.
