As of October 3, 2026, neither the New York Liberty nor the Atlanta Dream has advanced to the WNBA Finals. Their best-of-five semifinal is scheduled to begin October 4. If making a prediction before the series, Atlanta has the stronger regular-season résumé; New York has the more striking first-round result. The matchup is close enough that the eventual outcome should not be treated as settled.
What is at stake in the Liberty–Dream series?
Atlanta, the No. 4 seed, faces No. 8 New York in a semifinal scheduled to open October 4. The WNBA seeds its 2026 playoff field by regular-season record across the league, not by conference. The semifinal is best-of-five; its winner will advance to the best-of-seven Finals, listed on the bracket as beginning October 17.
The WNBA describes the format as “a best-of-three (1-1-1) first round, followed by best-of-five (2-2-1) semifinals and best-of-seven (2-2-1-1-1) finals” on its official 2026 playoff page.
Why Atlanta has a strong case
The Dream earned the higher seed
Atlanta finished 30-14, matching its franchise-best regular-season record, while New York finished 26-18. That gives the Dream the clearer full-season case, though regular-season standing alone does not decide a playoff series.

Atlanta brings scoring and rebounding production
The WNBA’s 2026 season preview ranked Atlanta’s offense third in the league at 91.3 points per game. Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard, and Allisha Gray combined for 53.1 points per game in the preview’s regular-season statistics. Reese led the league in rebounds, while Howard led it in steals. Those figures point to Atlanta’s scoring depth and rebounding as meaningful strengths; they do not, by themselves, establish how those strengths will match up against New York.
Why New York can turn the prediction around
The Liberty have already beaten the top seed
New York swept Minnesota 2-0 in the first round, eliminating the No. 1 seed. The WNBA’s recap archive identifies the Liberty as the first No. 8 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed under the current first-round format. It is compelling evidence of playoff capability, but it is a two-game sample against a different opponent—not a guarantee against Atlanta.

Stewart supplies all-around production
Breanna Stewart averaged 20.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game during the 2026 regular season, according to the WNBA preview. New York’s season was uneven: an eight-game winning streak was followed by a 2-8 stretch, then a 13-4 run before consecutive losses to close the regular season. That trajectory helps explain why the Liberty’s lower seed may not tell the whole story about their current postseason threat.
What the first-round results do—and do not—show
Both teams swept their opening series: Atlanta beat Washington 2-0, and New York beat Minnesota 2-0. The Dream’s first-round preview emphasized second-chance scoring and rebounding and framed Angel Reese’s matchup with Washington’s Shakira Austin as a battle in the paint. That is context for Atlanta’s personnel and style, not evidence of a specific advantage against the Liberty. The available official material does not establish a direct tactical edge for either side in this semifinal.

Prediction: a narrow edge to Atlanta, with real uncertainty
If choosing before the series, Atlanta is the more defensible pick on the evidence available: it had the better record, the higher seed, and a top-ranked offense. New York’s sweep of top-seeded Minnesota makes the Liberty a credible alternative, especially after their late-season 13-4 run. The first-round results are encouraging for both teams, but neither sweep settles this matchup.
Player availability could materially affect the forecast.
