A TikTok creator says an Ancestry DNA match led her family to a woman they believe was her grandmother’s daughter, born before the grandmother married and placed for adoption. The account, shared by Brielle (@briellehardman) and reported by The Daily Dot on September 30, 2026, is based on Brielle’s retelling; the outlet says it could not independently verify the family history.
What Brielle says happened
In a “get ready with me” video, Brielle recounted that her grandfather was asked on his deathbed whether he had hidden anything. According to her, he answered that he had not, “but I don’t know about your mother.” Her relatives apparently did not follow up on the remark at the time.
Years later, Brielle says, an aunt took an Ancestry DNA test and received a match she thought might be a sister to her and Brielle’s mother. Brielle said, “I just got a match from Ancestry. For someone that could be our sister.” The family initially wondered whether the grandfather had fathered another child, she recounted, before concluding that the woman might instead be the grandmother’s child from before marriage.
Brielle’s version is that her grandmother became pregnant while in high school, gave birth, and placed the child for adoption. She said the woman reportedly learned she was adopted at age 45. These are claims in Brielle’s account, not independently confirmed details: The Daily Dot said it could not verify the family history and relied on her TikTok retelling. The available account does not establish whether the grandfather knew about the pregnancy or adoption, why the child was placed for adoption, or how the woman reacted to the discovery.

What the DNA match can—and cannot—show
Ancestry says its matching process compares users’ DNA profiles with others in its database and estimates how closely they may be related. According to the company, match lists are based on DNA rather than family-tree information. A match can point relatives toward a possible connection, but it does not by itself prove the person’s identity or establish the full family story Brielle described.
Family trees, shared matches and messages can help people investigate a connection. Ancestry’s help documentation says some shared-match and family-tree analysis features require an Ancestry family-history membership; feature access and terms may change.

DNA matching is a choice, with privacy controls
Ancestry describes DNA matching as opt-in. Its privacy help page says users can choose whether to appear in DNA matches, control what matches can see, set different access levels for collaborators, and delete their DNA test results. These are the company’s descriptions of available controls, not a guarantee of privacy or security.
Ancestry’s DNA test kit page describes an origins report and the ability to connect with genetic relatives. Taking a test does not guarantee a particular discovery, and any resulting match still needs to be interpreted in context.

How the story spread
The Daily Dot reported that the video had more than 1.2 million views and 370 comments at the time of its September 30, 2026, article. Those are the outlet’s figures at publication, not a current count. The outlet reproduced the TikTok caption, “Grwm|| The family secret my grandma took to her grave”.
