That statement does not erase earlier reporting that Legacy worked with JGR on aerodynamic research and development in 2026: the reports describe different scopes and dates.
What Johnson said about JGR
A report published October 1, 2026, by Yahoo Sports/MotorBiscuit said Johnson made the remarks on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio; the outlet posted the interview on X. The report quoted Johnson: “We don’t have an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing, and we’ve really been trying to build a partnership with them and do that by hiring the right people and having the right aero engineering group, the chassis engineering group, all these different layers.”
The wording describes building a partnership through Legacy’s own engineering organization, not an alliance with JGR. The October report is a secondary account of the interview; the original recording or post was not independently accessed, so the quotation and attribution should be understood on that basis. How this fits with earlier JGR cooperation
Sports Business Journal reported on June 1, 2026, that Legacy was working with JGR on aerodynamic R&D while Johnson wanted the team to become independent over the long term rather than rely on a costly alliance with Toyota’s flagship team. That earlier report does not establish exactly what the R&D involved, whether it was formal or informal, or when it ended. Sports Business Journal

The available accounts therefore support a careful distinction: June reporting described a specific area of cooperation, aerodynamic R&D; in October, Johnson said Legacy did not have an alliance with JGR and pointed to in-house engineering capability as the way forward. They do not prove that Legacy had never worked with JGR or that every form of outside technical cooperation has ended.
Legacy’s Toyota relationship is separate
Toyota announced in May 2023 that Legacy’s manufacturer partnership would begin with the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. The announcement separately identified JGR and 23XI Racing as Toyota’s existing Cup Series team partners. What Legacy was building toward
More engineering capacity
Johnson said Legacy was hiring to develop its aero and chassis engineering groups. His comments describe an organizational plan; the cited reports provide no statistic measuring how independent the team had become or quantifying any competitive effect from that plan.
A third Cup car in 2027
NASCAR reported in March 2026 that Johnson confirmed a third Legacy car for the 2027 Cup season, saying an additional car could help accelerate the team’s development. NASCAR

As of the October 1 report, Josh Berry was set to replace John Hunter Nemechek in the No. 42, Erik Jones was to remain in the No. 43, and Riley Herbst was to drive the new No. 84. These were reported plans at that time, not a guarantee they remain current. The same report quoted Johnson as saying he believed Legacy could still win a race in 2026, expected another step in 2027, and considered wins an appropriate expectation for that season. Those are Johnson’s stated outlooks, not confirmed results or performance measures.
Business strategy tied to performance
A RACER feature in August 2026 described Legacy developing a strategic ownership group that included athletes, celebrities, and other investors. The team’s leadership presented fan experience and business connections as ways to attract resources for performance. Team president Michael Guttilla framed the test for an initiative this way: “One of the things we always ask ourselves as the North Star is, ‘Does that help us go faster?’” RACER

What the statement does—and does not—establish
- It establishes: Johnson said Legacy had no JGR alliance and described building aero and chassis engineering capability by hiring.
- It does not establish: that Legacy never cooperated with JGR, that all external technical work has stopped, or that the hiring plan has produced a measurable performance gain.
- It leaves distinct: Legacy’s Toyota manufacturer partnership, which began with the 2024 Cup season, and any team-level arrangement with JGR.
