Caleb Komolafe ran for 188 yards and a touchdown as Northwestern beat Penn State 34-13 on Friday, October 2, 2026, in the first game at the new Ryan Field in Evanston. The Wildcats’ ground game produced 413 yards, with Joseph Himon II adding 162 yards and two touchdowns.
Komolafe and Himon powered a 413-yard rushing effort
Komolafe carried 25 times for 188 yards and a touchdown, and added 14 receiving yards to finish with 202 yards from scrimmage. Himon needed 10 carries to gain 162 yards and scored twice. Together, they accounted for 350 of Northwestern’s 413 rushing yards. Northwestern said they became the first Big Ten teammate pair to each rush for more than 100 yards in the same game. Northwestern finished with 506 total yards. The school said its 413 rushing yards were its most in a game since gaining 444 against Illinois on November 22, 2003, and the most by a Big Ten team against FBS competition that season through this game.
How Northwestern built its lead
The Wildcats never trailed. Jackson Kleather opened the scoring with a 50-yard field goal, and Aidan Chiles extended the lead with a rushing touchdown. Penn State’s Carson Hansen answered with an eight-yard touchdown run to make it 10-7.

Himon scored twice before halftime, sending Northwestern into the break up 24-7. The Wildcats had outgained Penn State 278-139 in the first half and held a 237-26 advantage on the ground. Komolafe’s third-quarter rushing touchdown made it 31-7. Penn State’s Chase Sowell caught a late touchdown, and Kleather added another field goal for the 34-13 final.
Northwestern controlled the ground battle on both sides
The rushing disparity was central to the result: Northwestern gained 413 yards on the ground, while Penn State managed 48, a season low according to Northwestern’s recap. Penn State finished with 291 total yards, compared with the Wildcats’ 506. The numbers point to more than a star performance from Komolafe: Himon’s two scores and Northwestern’s collective rushing production helped shape the game, while its defense restricted Penn State’s running attack.

A milestone night at the new Ryan Field
The game marked the first at the new Ryan Field in Evanston, a milestone noted by the Associated Press report republished by ABC News. Northwestern head coach David Braun said, “This is something that dreams are made of — a night like tonight.” He also said, “We have the opportunity to dream bigger than we ever have before. Why wouldn’t you when you get to call this place your home?” Both remarks came in Northwestern’s official postgame account and referred to the occasion, not specifically to Komolafe.
