How to Create a YouTube Podcast Livestream With a Scrolling Episode Schedule

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To put a scrolling episode schedule on a YouTube podcast livestream, create the event in YouTube Studio, send your show through OBS Studio, and add a text or browser source with OBS’s Scroll filter. YouTube’s pinned chat message can hold a schedule for chat viewers, but it does not appear over the video.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says a first live stream may take up to 24 hours to become enabled; check its current encoder streaming instructions for eligibility and restrictions.
  • OBS Studio, an audio source such as your existing podcast microphone or mixer, and any camera, artwork, or other visual you want in the scene. You do not need to buy a new microphone if your current setup already provides suitable audio.
  • A short episode schedule: for example, the episode title, current segment, and a few upcoming segments or timestamps. Check names and times before the show, and keep the copy brief enough to read while it moves.

How to create the YouTube event and prepare OBS

  1. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live, open Manage, and schedule a stream. Enter the event details and choose its privacy setting. Scheduling gives you a watch-page URL to share in advance. YouTube’s event setup and encoder guidance is in its encoder streaming instructions.
  2. Build your OBS scene. Add the microphone or other audio source for the show, then add any camera, artwork, or visual elements. OBS’s Sources Guide covers audio sources and common visual sources. Arrange the scene so the schedule will have a clear area that does not obscure faces, titles, or captions.
  3. Add the schedule text. For a simple ticker, add an OBS Text source and enter the schedule, or configure it to read from a text file. For more control over typography or layout, add a Browser source that loads a local file or web page. See OBS’s Text Sources and Browser Source guides.
  4. Apply the Scroll filter. Select the schedule source in OBS, open Filters, add Scroll, and set the direction and speed. Configure looping and any width or height limits to suit the layout. OBS describes the filter as a way to scroll a source in any direction and specifically identifies marquee text as a use case in its Scroll Filter guide. There is no universal ideal speed: preview the ticker and adjust it until viewers can read each item.
  5. Preview the complete scene. Check the overlay at the intended output size and confirm the ticker loops or stops as you intend. Keep the text legible with strong contrast and enough on-screen space. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before a first stream; these checks are production guidance, not a claim that a particular setup has been tested here.
  6. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, or select YouTube in OBS if that option is available. Treat the stream key as a credential: use the one for the intended event and do not share it publicly. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room; when the scheduled event is ready, click Go live there. End the broadcast through the Live Control Room and encoder workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check its current encoder guidance for any changes.

Choose the schedule treatment that fits the show

Option Best for Trade-off
OBS scrolling text or browser overlay A schedule that stays visible in the video and its playback. Requires layout and speed choices; long moving text can be difficult to read.
Static OBS text panel A current segment label or a few upcoming items that viewers should read at their own pace. It takes up scene space, but avoids moving text. OBS Text sources support typed text and text-file input.
Pinned YouTube live-chat message A simple schedule viewers can consult in chat. It appears in chat, not over the video. YouTube allows one pinned message at a time, and only the creator can pin it—not moderators or viewers. See YouTube’s live chat guidance.

Make the schedule useful during a podcast

  • Show only what viewers need to orient themselves: the episode name, the segment happening now, and a few next items. A long list becomes harder to follow as it scrolls.
  • Use consistent separators and time labels, and verify the schedule against the actual rundown. If the show runs late or changes order, update the text source or the file feeding it.
  • Choose a clear, high-contrast style and a path that does not compete with the speaker, captions, or important artwork. Preview the full composition rather than judging the ticker by itself.
  • Remember that the event and the broadcast are separate pieces: YouTube Studio creates and schedules the event, while OBS sends the audio and video feed. Confirm the correct scheduled event, stream URL, and key before starting.

Troubleshooting common problems

The schedule is not visible

Check that the text or browser source is enabled and not hidden behind another source in the OBS scene. For a text file, confirm OBS is reading the intended file and that it contains text. For a Browser source, check that the selected local file or page loads.

The schedule does not move

Confirm that the Scroll filter is attached to the schedule source, not a different scene item, and that its speed is nonzero. If the source is a browser layout, check that the selected source and filter combination behaves as intended in the OBS preview.

Viewers cannot read the ticker

Shorten the schedule, slow the scroll, increase text size or contrast, and preview at the output dimensions. Consider replacing the ticker with a static panel or pinned chat schedule if viewers need to study a detailed rundown.

YouTube does not show a stream preview

Check that OBS is connected to the intended scheduled event and uses its matching stream URL and key. Confirm OBS is sending the stream, then wait for the Live Control Room preview. If the channel has not streamed before, activation may take up to 24 hours; consult YouTube’s current eligibility and restriction guidance.

The pinned message is not on the video

That is expected: a pinned message remains in live chat. To display schedule text in the video itself, use an OBS text or browser source and, if desired, its Scroll filter.
