To loop a podcast MP4 in a YouTube Live stream with OBS Studio, add it as a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop. For a rotation of episodes, use an OBS VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, test the full audio and video path, and monitor the stream: a loop does not guarantee unattended 24/7 operation.
Choose how OBS should play your podcast files
Use Media Source for one MP4 that should repeat. Use VLC Video when you want OBS to play several files in sequence. These are playback choices inside OBS, not separate YouTube stream types.
| Need | OBS source | Repeat control | Requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replay one local MP4 | Media Source | Loop | OBS documents MP4 support and looping. |
| Play multiple files as a playlist | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Gapless transitions are not promised. |
OBS documents both source types and their playback controls in its Media Sources guide.
Set up a single podcast MP4 loop
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you plan to stream.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
- In the source properties, select Local File, browse to the podcast MP4, and select it.
- Enable Loop so OBS replays the file when playback completes.
- Check properties such as Restart playback when source becomes active, Show nothing when playback ends, and Visibility Behaviour against your scene setup. Record a test to confirm that the file keeps playing as expected when you change scenes or source visibility.
OBS lists MP4 among the supported video formats. Avoid assuming that source defaults fit every scene arrangement; verify the behavior in your own test recording.

Set up a playlist of podcast episodes
- Install VLC before adding the source. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video.
- Populate the source’s playlist with the local MP4 files you want to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled if the playlist should repeat; OBS documents this option as on by default.
- Test episode boundaries, picture, and audio. OBS does not promise gapless transitions, so check whether pauses or silence between files are acceptable for your stream.
Build the scene and check audio
Add cover art, a title card, or text if you want a visual while the podcast plays. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear above lower sources, so arrange the list to keep overlays visible without covering anything important.
- Watch the Audio Mixer while the MP4 plays. Its meters should move when the file’s embedded audio is active.
- Make a short OBS recording and play it back to verify both picture and sound.
- Check that the video fits the canvas as intended and that overlays remain legible throughout playback.
OBS recommends testing output settings and doing a short test before the first stream. Its streaming guide covers initial setup and output checks.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you plan to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the YouTube service integration if appropriate, or enter the server URL and key manually, then apply the settings.
- Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your YouTube stream.
- Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview before publishing to your audience.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to enter the server URL and key. OBS service options and interface labels can vary, so use the URL and key provided for the selected YouTube stream.
Choose stable encoder settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select bitrate guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use rather than treating one number as universal.

| Example output | YouTube bitrate guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | These are YouTube’s figures for this specific codec, resolution, and frame rate, not a general bitrate for every podcast stream. |
The figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance retrieved in 2026. YouTube says it automatically detects stream settings and transcodes live feeds for viewers at different formats. See its live encoder settings for other output combinations.
Test the whole stream before going live
- Run a short private or unlisted test stream where appropriate.
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the intended picture and that the podcast audio is audible.
- For a playlist, wait for a file change and confirm the next episode plays; if it is a single file, confirm playback loops.
- Check OBS and YouTube’s stream health indicators while the test is running.
- If you are recording locally as a backup, verify that the recording starts and that its file size grows.
YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing the setup, checking the preview, monitoring audio and video, and checking local archive file growth. A short test helps catch configuration problems, but it cannot establish that a setup will remain uninterrupted indefinitely.

What to expect from long streams and archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive if the recording matters. The 12-hour threshold is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
OBS can loop media, but that alone does not guarantee recovery after a computer crash, network outage, or YouTube disconnect. Plan how the stream will be monitored and restarted if uninterrupted availability matters. For streams that need an archive, decide how and when to end and restart the live session rather than assuming a very long broadcast will produce a complete replay.

Check copyright and rebroadcast permissions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the live picture with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. YouTube notes that licensed content can still be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on live streams and copyrighted content.
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission for the podcast recording and every included element—music, clips, artwork, and other third-party material—to be rebroadcast live on YouTube. Possessing a copy of an episode or a license does not by itself establish that YouTube will permit uninterrupted live use.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely check | Fix or next step |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu. |
| The MP4 plays once and stops | The Media Source’s Loop property is off. | Open the source properties, enable Loop, and verify with a test recording. |
| The playlist stops after its last file | Loop Playlist may be disabled. | Check the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Podcast picture appears but audio is missing | The source may not be outputting audio as expected, or the wrong mixer/track may be monitored. | Check Audio Mixer meters during playback, then record a short test and listen to the recording before streaming. |
| Episode changes include a pause or silence | Gapless transitions are not promised for VLC Video playlists. | Test the actual episode boundaries and adjust the files or playlist expectations before going live. |
| YouTube preview is blank or the stream does not connect | The selected stream, server URL, or key may not match. | Compare OBS’s stream destination and key with the selected stream in YouTube Studio. If needed, refresh the key in YouTube and update OBS. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding overload | The computer may not sustain the current output and scene load. | OBS troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, and limiting expensive sources. Test each change against the quality your computer can sustain. |
| Stream is interrupted after a copyright match | YouTube may have detected third-party material, even if you believe it is licensed. | Review the rights for every element and confirm with the rights holder whether the channel is allowlisted through Content ID. |
For overload guidance, see the OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
