Can a YouTube Podcast Livestream Play Episodes with Different Audio Formats?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. A live encoder such as OBS can play podcast episodes from different supported source formats while sending YouTube one consistent outgoing audio stream. The format of each episode file and the format sent to YouTube are separate: the encoder decodes the source and outputs audio using a codec supported by the YouTube ingest method you choose.

How mixed-format podcast episodes work in a livestream

Your episode files do not all have to use the same format. Playback software reads each source file, then the encoder packages the resulting audio for delivery to YouTube. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC and MP3 as supported outgoing audio codecs; OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV as supported audio media-source types. That covers many common files, but it does not guarantee that every codec profile or unusual file will decode correctly.

YouTube also transcodes live streams into viewer-facing output formats, so the codec you send is an ingest setting—not a promise that viewers receive the original episode file unchanged. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Set up mixed-format episodes in OBS

  1. Add the episodes as media sources. In OBS, add each audio file using a Media Source, or build a playlist of media sources for sequential playback. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV as supported audio types and describes playlist behavior in its Media Sources documentation.
  2. Check playback and audio routing. Play every file in OBS before going live. Watch the audio mixer to confirm that the source registers and reaches the stream mix; listen for silence, clipping, unexpected volume differences or an abrupt start or end. Test transitions between different formats, not just each file in isolation.
  3. Choose the outgoing codec for your ingest route. For the documented RTMP/RTMPS workflow, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For standard stereo, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. Set these as output settings in the encoder; they do not require converting every source episode to the same file format first.
  4. Test privately or unlisted before the scheduled stream. Include episode changes and transitions in the test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. An unusual file should be tested in the actual encoder you will use rather than assumed compatible.
  5. Start the YouTube live session and connect the encoder. Use the stream key for the intended YouTube live event in your encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private. Confirm YouTube receives audio and reports a healthy incoming stream before making the broadcast public.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS: choose the matching audio settings

YouTube ingest route Audio codecs listed by YouTube Practical point
RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3 YouTube’s stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. See encoder settings.
HLS AAC, AC3 or EAC3 YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. See HLS setup guidance.

Choose the codec based on the protocol and encoder configuration, not on whichever format happens to be used by one episode. HLS is an alternative ingestion route, not a requirement for playing mixed-format files.

A livestream is different from podcast RSS delivery

A podcast RSS feed and a live encoder solve different distribution problems. YouTube describes a podcast as a playlist of videos. With RSS ingestion, it creates a separate video for selected feed episodes, typically using the show’s artwork as a static image; new feed episodes can be uploaded automatically. RSS ingestion is available only in selected countries or regions. It does not create a continuous livestream. Read YouTube’s guidance on delivering podcasts using an RSS feed and distributing podcasts on YouTube.

There is also a correction limitation specific to RSS: YouTube says an episode’s audio cannot be changed automatically after publication. Re-uploading a corrected file from the feed creates a new video and makes the old one private. That is separate from how an encoder handles episode formats during a live stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • An episode plays in OBS but viewers hear nothing: Check that the media source is routed to the stream mix and that its audio meter moves. Confirm the encoder is sending an audio codec supported by the selected YouTube ingest route.
  • One episode works but another is silent or fails to play: The second file may use an encoding OBS cannot decode, despite having a familiar extension. Test it independently in the chosen encoder and convert or replace it if necessary; do not rely on the extension alone.
  • Audio works locally but not in the YouTube preview: Verify that the correct live event and stream key are in use, the encoder is streaming audio, and YouTube reports the incoming stream as healthy. Run a private or unlisted test before the public broadcast.
  • The change between episodes causes a gap or jump in loudness: Check the playlist order, file endings and beginnings, and relative source levels. Include the exact transition in a test stream so you can hear the result before broadcast.
  • HLS audio arrives later than expected: YouTube documents higher latency for HLS than RTMP. Account for that difference when coordinating any live host or other real-time elements.
