How to Set Up FFmpeg to Loop Podcast Episodes on YouTube Live in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a podcast episode on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the input file’s -i option, then send the feed to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command is the same in India as elsewhere; use your own channel’s ingest details and test your local upload connection before relying on it.

What you need before starting

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires livestreamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Live streaming enabled on the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • A computer with FFmpeg installed, an internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen stream settings, and a podcast file containing the video and audio you intend to send.
  • Permission to stream the podcast’s audio, video, music, clips, artwork, and other included material.

This is YouTube’s standard encoder workflow, not a special India-only configuration. Your channel’s stream URL and key come from its Live Control Room; local upload capacity and routing still need to be tested.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
  2. Create an encoder stream or schedule one, then open its stream settings.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS URL. YouTube may initially display a regular RTMP URL; its RTMPS guidance explains how to reveal the secure URL.
  4. Keep the key secret. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared log, or public instructions. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.

The URL and key are credentials for your stream, so copy the values from your own Live Control Room instead of guessing an endpoint. YouTube’s API describes the publishing destination in the form STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; depending on the tool and how YouTube presents the fields, the key may be appended to the URL or entered separately. See the YouTube Live Streaming API reference.

Loop an audio-and-video episode with FFmpeg

For a single MP4 that already has both the podcast audio and a visual track, this is a starting-point command. Replace the output placeholder with the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "episode.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL:443/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"

What the loop and real-time options do

  • -stream_loop -1 is an input option that tells FFmpeg to repeat that input forever. It must appear before the corresponding -i. The FFmpeg documentation defines -1 as infinite looping.
  • -re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. FFmpeg documents this option in real-time streaming examples.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 selects the first video and first audio streams from input 0. Confirm those are actually the intended streams before using the mapping unchanged.

Encoding values and their limits

The example uses H.264, constant-rate-style bitrate limits, AAC audio, a two-second GOP at 30 fps, and an 8 Mbps video target. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation for 720p30 is 8 Mbps; this command does not force the file to 720p or 30 fps. Match resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to the actual input and YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), H.264/HEVC/AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio.

At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. If the output frame rate differs, adjust the GOP to preserve the desired interval. The bitrate in the sample should not be treated as a universal recommendation for every resolution or frame rate. Higher-quality output needs more sustained upload capacity.

Check the file and start the broadcast

  1. Inspect the file with a media probe such as ffprobe, and confirm it has the audio and video streams you plan to map. The example assumes one file with both. If it has no video track, add a visual input such as a still image and map streams accordingly; if it has no audio track, it cannot supply the intended podcast audio.
  2. Paste the adjusted command into a terminal. Replace episode.mp4 with your file path and replace the output placeholder with the exact RTMPS destination and key from Live Control Room.
  3. Start FFmpeg and wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Confirm picture and sound before going live.
  4. Test with representative moving video and audio before an event. While live, watch stream health and any warnings in YouTube Studio.
  5. To stop, interrupt FFmpeg and use the Live Control Room controls appropriate to your stream type. For an immediate encoder stream, YouTube says stopping the encoder feed ends the stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream does not appear in YouTube Studio: Confirm the command uses the current stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, and that FFmpeg is still running. Check the key carefully; do not substitute an endpoint copied from another channel or stream.
  • SSL or connection errors: Check that the copied destination starts with rtmps and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance notes port 443 for SSL errors.
  • Picture or sound is missing: Inspect the input streams and revise the -map options. The sample expects the first video and audio stream in a single file; it will not create a video stream for an audio-only file.
  • Stream health warns about bitrate or dropped frames: Compare your encoder settings with YouTube’s current recommendations and test your sustained upload speed. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate.
  • The stream stops or is interrupted: Check FFmpeg’s terminal output, the network connection, and YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages. Restarting the encoder may be necessary, depending on the cause.

Rights and YouTube’s live-content checks

Looping a file does not give you permission to broadcast it. Use podcast material your channel has rights to stream, including music, clips, and artwork. YouTube scans live feeds for third-party matches; identified content may trigger a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before broadcasting.

Or let it run in the cloud

FFmpeg works when you can keep the computer and connection available. If you want an uploaded podcast to keep looping without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
