For a spoken-word podcast streamed from a home computer, start with OBS output at 720p30, H.264, CBR, an 8 Mbps video bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; those are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a home connection or computer can sustain a continuous stream. Measure your upload, leave headroom, test the real scene, and monitor the stream before relying on it for long runs.
Recommended OBS settings for a YouTube podcast stream
For a mostly static or lightly animated podcast scene, 720p30 is a sensible starting point. It uses less bandwidth and encoding capacity than 1080p30, while keeping the image clear enough for a host, cover art, or simple visualizer. This is a practical recommendation for podcast scenes, not a special preset prescribed by YouTube.

For 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate for H.264. These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings documentation, checked in 2026.
Check upload capacity before choosing 720p or 1080p
Measure sustained upload capacity at the computer and on the connection you will actually use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% above the total stream bitrate. Count audio as well as video, and allow for other devices, network traffic, and any backup stream. For a 720p30 stream targeting 8 Mbps video plus 128 Kbps audio, that means planning for more than the combined stream bitrate—not treating 8 Mbps as the required internet speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend this 20% margin; it is guidance, not a measurement of Indian broadband availability.

- Choose 720p30 if 1080p’s higher bitrate would leave too little headroom or make encoding less reliable.
- Choose 1080p30 only if the computer encodes your actual scene reliably over an extended test and the connection has room beyond the 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate.
- For a static podcast image, higher resolution may add little practical value; prioritize stable delivery and intelligible audio.
Set up OBS and YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming and create the stream: In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel, then create or schedule a stream and open its Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Eligibility and activation details are controlled by YouTube and may vary by channel.
- Protect the stream key: Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream configuration. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish or share it; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the video output: In OBS, select an available H.264 encoder and set the output to 1280 × 720 at 30 fps to begin. Use CBR, 8 Mbps video bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. OBS labels and available hardware/software encoders depend on the installed build and computer, so verify the actual output rather than assuming every system has identical options.
- Configure audio and color: Set stereo audio to AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz where those options are available, and use Rec. 709, 8-bit for SDR. Check that the microphone is selected, not muted, and not clipping.
- Select the transport: Use RTMPS when available in the OBS stream settings; YouTube recommends it for encrypted transport.
- Test the complete scene: Start a private or unlisted test with the microphone, levels, graphics, transitions, and any motion you plan to use. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the stream public. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live.
- Verify playback: Open the live page on the channel and check it from another device, including a phone. Confirm that both picture and audio are present and remain acceptable while the stream is running.
Plan for a long-running stream, not just a successful start
OBS settings do not ensure uninterrupted 24/7 operation. A home setup depends on the computer staying powered and cool, OBS remaining healthy, the home network and internet connection staying available, and local conditions. YouTube’s encoder checklist advises monitoring the stream; keep an eye on the Live Control Room’s stream health and listen to the actual playback rather than assuming a successful connection means a good viewer experience.
Choose latency and DVR for the show format
If the podcast is not interactive, ultra-low latency is usually unnecessary. Lower latency can increase buffering for viewers. YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, which may be useful for a long-form show; check the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio if you want that behavior. Keep rights and channel rules in view
Only include audio, video, and artwork you have the rights to stream. A continuous stream does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or guarantee that repeated or reused material is eligible for monetization. Review the current policies in YouTube Studio and use licensed or original material; no OBS bitrate setting can resolve a rights or policy issue.
