You can host a continuous YouTube stream on a VPS by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS, and supervising the process so it can restart after failure. The basic path is media source → FFmpeg on an always-on VPS → YouTube Live. A VPS gives you a remote computer and network connection; it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- A VPS that can remain online and sustain the required outbound upload rate. Check the provider’s network and bandwidth terms for your plan and region; no particular VPS plan is guaranteed by the bitrate figures below.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus a media file or another input source. This walkthrough uses a prerecorded file.
- A YouTube encoder stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address for a stream.
For a live camera or another live input, the server-to-YouTube output and supervision steps remain similar, but the FFmpeg input configuration must match that source. The example below is not a camera setup.
Choose the stream settings and budget bandwidth
YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 recommends H.264 bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. It recommends 20% upload headroom. That makes the 1080p30 example at least 6 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity for the stream alone; allow more for other server traffic or a backup encoder. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees about a VPS provider’s route or actual stream quality.
| Choice | What changes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | YouTube H.264 recommendation: 5 Mbps | Plan at least 6 Mbps sustained outbound capacity for the stream alone when applying YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation. |
| 1080p60 | YouTube H.264 recommendation: 12 Mbps | Higher motion smoothness requires more sustained outbound capacity than the 1080p30 example. |
| RTMP or RTMPS | YouTube supports both encoder ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS for encryption. | Use the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room when available and configure the matching URL and key. |
| Stream-copy or transcoding | Copying avoids re-encoding when the source already fits the required output; transcoding gives control over output settings but consumes server resources. | Whether copying works depends on the source codecs and container. Confirm compatibility before relying on it; transcoding requires enough CPU or GPU capacity. |
YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match your settings to the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and stream configuration. The example command below uses H.264 and AAC.

Enable live streaming and create an encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s requirements include channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Use YouTube’s current help page for the exact Studio workflow: Manage live stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and key from the stream settings. Prefer the RTMPS ingest URL where available. Do not publish the key, place a real key in screenshots, or expose it in a public command or shell history. If it is compromised, reset it in Studio.
Install FFmpeg and check the input file
Install FFmpeg through your VPS operating system’s supported package source or a trusted FFmpeg project build. The exact package command varies by operating system and release, so use that system’s current installation guidance rather than assuming one command fits every VPS. Check the installed build and available options with ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h.

ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4
Confirm that the file opens, has the expected audio and video streams, and can be read continuously. A compatible file may be sent with stream-copy, which avoids encoding load; if its codecs or parameters do not match your intended YouTube output, configure transcoding instead and verify the VPS has enough resources.
Run a prerecorded video to YouTube with FFmpeg
Replace the placeholders with the actual RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube, plus your file path. Do not paste a real key into a publicly shared script or log. This sample loops one file and transcodes to H.264/AAC at 1080p30; adjust the output bitrate and scaling to suit the source and your chosen stream settings.

The 5 Mbps video target corresponds to YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation accessed in 2026 for 1080p30. The 60-frame GOP is a two-second interval at 30 fps. This is an example, not a universal command: check FFmpeg’s installed encoder options, your source’s dimensions and frame rate, and the exact ingest URL format supplied by YouTube. Do not include the literal placeholder text in a real stream destination.
If you choose stream-copy, the command’s codec and scaling options must be changed; copying is suitable only when the source already conforms to the required output. For a 1080p60 H.264 stream, YouTube’s current recommendation is 12 Mbps, so revisit bandwidth, encoding capacity, frame rate, and keyframe interval rather than reusing the 1080p30 values unchanged.

Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
Do not rely on an SSH terminal staying open. Run the encoder under a service manager or supervisor configured to restart a failed process, keep logs, and alert you when output stops. FFmpeg documents protocol reconnect controls and a FIFO muxer example for recovering RTMP output after temporary network failure; available options depend on the installed FFmpeg version. Check its local help and the FFmpeg protocol documentation before adding reconnect flags or changing muxing behavior.
- Configure the supervisor to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit, with a sensible delay to avoid a rapid restart loop.
- Record and rotate logs so they remain useful without filling the VPS disk.
- Monitor process status, FFmpeg output errors, CPU and memory pressure, disk space if recording locally, and network loss.
- Test recovery by stopping the process or interrupting connectivity in a controlled test stream, then verify that the supervisor restarts it and YouTube receives output again.
Reconnect logic and process restarts improve resilience, but they cannot prevent an outage caused by the VPS, YouTube, the network route, or a failed input file. A primary-and-backup encoder can add resilience but brings extra infrastructure and operational complexity; design and test failover rather than assuming two processes will fail over correctly.

Test, monitor, and manage a continuous broadcast
- Start with an unlisted or test stream. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the encoder feed and that its preview shows the expected video and audio.
- Open the watch page and verify playback from a viewer’s perspective. Check audio levels, video quality, and stream health in Live Control Room.
- Only after the test works, set the intended visibility or schedule the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health and server logs after launch, and periodically check that the process is still sending data.
- For a long-running channel, decide whether to run one continuous broadcast or divide programming into sessions. YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive; confirm current Studio handling and make separate recordings if a local archive matters.
Common VPS streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect ingest URL or key, a stopped process, or a connection problem. | Verify the current URL and key in Live Control Room, inspect FFmpeg logs, and confirm the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Reset an exposed key. |
| Stream health is poor or playback buffers | Insufficient or unstable outbound capacity, or output settings that do not suit the source. | Measure sustained upload from the VPS, apply headroom beyond the stream bitrate, and check CPU load and encoder output. |
| Video appears choppy or has the wrong motion cadence | Frame-rate mismatch, constrained compute, or input frame-rate issues. | Inspect the source with ffprobe, check the configured output frame rate, and monitor encoder load. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | The input lacks an audio stream, audio encoding is misconfigured, or the source has timing problems. | Inspect the input streams and FFmpeg logs; verify an allowed audio codec and test the output before making the stream public. |
| FFmpeg exits and does not return | No supervisor restart policy, a repeated fatal configuration error, or exhausted server resources. | Check exit logs and resource usage, correct the underlying issue, and confirm the service manager restarts a clean test process. |
| Broadcast returns but the archive is incomplete or absent | Long-session archive behavior or Studio handling differs from the assumption that a full-day stream becomes one recording. | Check current YouTube Studio archive behavior and keep a separate recording if retaining the full program is important. |
Costs and operational trade-offs
A VPS approach means choosing and paying for server infrastructure, then maintaining FFmpeg, monitoring, storage if you record locally, and recovery behavior. Compare plans using their sustained outbound bandwidth terms, location, resource limits, and price; those details vary by provider and are not established here. More resolution, frame rate, or transcoding complexity can raise bandwidth and compute needs. A second encoder or server adds redundancy but also cost and setup work.
