In OBS Studio, enable Loop on a single Media Source; for several local files, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube does not replay a finished upload to keep an encoder stream alive—the encoder must continue sending valid video and audio.
Loop one video or cycle through a playlist in OBS
One video file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will be live.
- Select the source, open its properties, choose the video file, and enable Loop.
- Check that the source is visible in the active scene and that playback restarts when the file reaches its end.
Several video files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and build the playlist from your local files.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then check that the source is visible in the active scene.
OBS documents Media Source looping for a single file and VLC Video playlist looping. The VLC option is useful when you want multiple items to cycle rather than one clip to repeat. OBS’s guidance was published January 11, 2022, so labels or layouts may differ in newer versions.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as the password and address for the stream.
- Start streaming from OBS and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room. Start the YouTube event when you are ready for viewers to see it.
Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio. These settings let creators start or stop streaming from the encoder; if the event should remain live, avoid a configuration that ends it when the encoder stops sending. The loop setting only controls media playback. It cannot prevent a network outage, encoder failure, or other interruption in the feed.
Test the handoff before going public
- Run an unlisted test stream and watch through the end of a file.
- Confirm that the single video restarts or that the playlist advances, while the encoder continues sending content and the live event remains active.
- Check audio, video, and stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends previewing and testing the setup before relying on it.
- During a public broadcast, monitor both the media source and the live feed. If the video repeats but the event ends, check the encoder output, connection, and YouTube auto-stop behavior separately.
Know what happens when a stream ends
For an encoder stream, YouTube’s instruction is: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” A loop keeps the media source playing; it does not make a finished or disconnected encoder stream continue by itself.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a local recording if having an archive matters. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. With DVR disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast, though a recording may still be available afterward.
If you want to send viewers somewhere else after ending the current event, YouTube Live Redirect can hand them off to a Premiere or another live stream. It is a transition after the event ends, not a way to keep the same event running. YouTube advises setting up the Premiere first and telling viewers to wait about two seconds for their screens to reload.
