You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast from OBS by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, adding its stream URL and key in OBS, and keeping a reliable computer and internet connection running. First check that your channel can livestream; then configure and test the broadcast before making it public. A 24/7 setup also needs a plan for interruptions, copyright checks and the fact that YouTube documents automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours.
Before you set up OBS: check YouTube access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Its Help page also says streamers must be at least 16. Check channel eligibility before building a continuous setup: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
For an India-based creator, the same YouTube eligibility and encoder requirements apply. A 24/7 webcast is operationally possible in India—NIC describes 24×7 services for government TV channels and lists OBS among encoders used for webcasts—but that institutional example is not a guarantee of uptime on a home computer or consumer internet connection.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live. Choose the encoder workflow and create or schedule the broadcast. Set its title, visibility and other event details there.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if the option is available; otherwise choose a custom server and enter the URL and key supplied by Live Control Room.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your event. Do not show it on stream or share it publicly. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Configure OBS for a stable broadcast
Choose the video settings to match your connection
YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 in the applicable ingestion modes, with frame rates up to 60 fps. For a typical SDR OBS broadcast, H.264 is a straightforward starting point. Choose resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s official bitrate and encoder settings table, and confirm your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with room for fluctuations.
There is no single upload-speed figure that fits every 24/7 setup: the required capacity depends on resolution, frame rate, audio settings and the stability of the connection. Test at the settings you intend to use rather than relying on a speed-test result alone.
Use the recommended encoder fundamentals
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: H.264 is a practical default for ordinary SDR streaming.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted connection to its servers.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 is supported. YouTube’s guide recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio; for 5.1 audio it recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
Use YouTube’s settings table for the exact bitrate at your chosen resolution and frame rate; avoid copying a bitrate intended for a different output.

When HLS may make sense
RTMPS is the usual choice for a standard OBS stream. HLS is a specialized alternative for supported codecs or HDR workflows, but YouTube notes that it has higher latency. HLS also has protocol requirements, including TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Choose it only when your encoder and delivery needs call for it; YouTube lists OBS among HLS-capable encoders in its ingestion protocol guidance.
Test before you go public
- Start the encoder ahead of the intended broadcast. This gives YouTube time to receive the feed and identify problems before viewers arrive.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture is correct and audio is present, intelligible and at a sensible level.
- Watch on a separate viewer device. An unlisted test can help you verify what an actual viewer receives, including audio/video sync and playback behavior.
- Test the recovery plan. If you expect to use a backup encoder or alternate connection, test that path rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
- Monitor the stream while it runs. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality and testing encoder failover. For a continuous broadcast, arrange a person or alerting process to notice a frozen picture, muted audio or a disconnected stream.

Plan for power, internet and OBS interruptions
A 24/7 stream from OBS depends on the computer, encoder and network remaining available. Decide how OBS will be restarted after a crash, how the broadcast will be restored after an ISP outage, and who or what will notice a failure. A UPS sized for the actual load and desired runtime can reduce the risk of a brief power cut affecting the computer and network equipment; it will not fix an internet outage or a YouTube-side failure.

YouTube recommends testing failover, but a backup encoder needs its own configuration and a tested way to take over. Do not assume that a second OBS installation, spare PC or alternate connection will recover the event without intervention.
Decide how to handle the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. They do not promise automatic archival for a single 24-hour stream, nor establish what happens to every stream at or beyond 12 hours. If viewers need a replay, consider shorter scheduled events with deliberate transitions and confirm current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on a 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete VOD.

This creates a real trade-off: one long event may provide continuity, while shorter events make it easier to work within YouTube’s documented under-12-hour archive guidance. Plan around whether uninterrupted live playback or replay availability matters more for your channel.

Clear rights for music, video and other content
Use original material or secure permissions that cover livestreaming and any replay use. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content and may interrupt a stream when it detects a match. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright restrictions.
India’s Copyright Office describes Section 52 exceptions as limited and purpose-specific, not blanket permission to relay songs, films, television or other third-party feeds. YouTube’s terms require the relevant rights for the territories where content is used and compliance with local rules: YouTube Terms of Service and the Indian Copyright Office. For a commercially important or legally uncertain broadcast, get permission or qualified legal advice about the specific content.
Costs and operating choices
The OBS method itself is software-first; extra paid equipment is not mandatory. The main practical costs are the computer’s electricity, a connection capable of sustaining the chosen bitrate, and any optional resilience equipment such as a UPS. YouTube ad revenue is conditional on channel eligibility, and ads are not guaranteed to serve. Its published automatic mid-roll comparison measured average instream revenue per hour across 207 countries in January 2024; that aggregate is not an earnings forecast for an individual Indian creator.
