If your YouTube 24/7 stream keeps disconnecting, first find out whether the encoder is losing its connection to YouTube or viewers are having playback trouble. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages alongside your encoder’s output, then measure upload capacity under normal network use. YouTube’s guidance is general, not evidence of a problem unique to Indian internet providers; diagnose the connection at your location before blaming an ISP.
First identify what is disconnecting
A creator-side disconnect and a viewer-side playback problem have different causes. Note the exact time of each report, what the encoder says, and any stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube displays stream health and error messages there; use them to connect a failure with its timing and any bitrate, format, keyframe, or stream configuration warning. YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance and stream-health information explain where to check.
- Only one viewer is affected: their device or internet connection is a likely place to investigate.
- Several viewers on the same network are affected: that shared network may be involved.
- Viewers on separate networks report trouble: investigate the encoder and stream output, as well as Live Control Room warnings.
- Your encoder reports that it lost connection: focus on encoder output and the outbound connection from the streaming location.
These are diagnostic directions, not proof of a cause. The symptoms and timestamps help narrow down what to test next.
Check the encoder before changing your internet plan
Look at the encoder’s output and any local preview or recording. If the picture or sound is already faulty there, or the encoder reports errors or heavy CPU load, investigate the encoder software and audio/video inputs first. Update the encoder software and check whether its output remains healthy during the period when the stream drops. A problem visible before the stream reaches YouTube is not fixed by changing ISPs.

If the encoder output is healthy but YouTube reports an ingestion or connection issue, compare its warnings with the encoder’s settings and connection status. Keep the time of the warning and the exact error text; these details are useful when contacting support.
Measure upload capacity under real conditions
For a live stream, the relevant figure is outbound upload capacity, not just the download speed shown in an internet plan or speed test. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth. Measure upload while the connection is being used normally, including by other people and devices that are typically online during the stream.

YouTube recommends keeping about 20% of upload capacity available beyond the total bitrate being sent. For example, a stream using 8 Mbps needs roughly 9.6 Mbps of upload capacity to retain that margin, before accounting for other network traffic. This is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube puts it plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
If the connection is shared, other users’ uploads or downloads can reduce the bandwidth and stability available to the encoder. Repeat the upload test in the conditions when disconnects normally happen rather than relying only on an idle-network result.

Match encoder settings to YouTube’s recommendations
Do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every stream. The recommended value depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:

These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISP performance. YouTube’s table gives different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so consult the entry for the exact codec and frame rate you have selected instead of applying the H.264 figures universally. - Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Set keyframes every 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS for ingestion, as recommended in YouTube’s streaming guidance.
- Check Live Control Room for warnings about bitrate, codec, audio format, keyframes, or stream dimensions before making changes.
If upload capacity is insufficient for your chosen settings, reduce bitrate or resolution to a level the connection can sustain. Change one setting at a time, then check stream health and the encoder during a test. YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings provide the codec-specific details.

If the encoder is using Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection if possible. This removes Wi-Fi signal conditions as one variable; it does not prove that Wi-Fi caused the disconnect and will not repair an ISP-side problem. YouTube’s guidance on network reliability and failover testing offers context for checking the connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one optional way to run the test, but buying a cable is not a substitute for identifying where the fault occurs.

For a useful comparison, record whether each test used wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi, the measured upload, other network activity, encoder status, and the time of any drop. This makes it easier to distinguish a local wireless issue from insufficient upload capacity or an encoder/configuration problem.
Check primary and backup encoder setup
If you use a backup encoder, YouTube says the primary and backup streams must have matching settings for failover. A backup configured differently may not take over as expected. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable; do this as a planned test, not during a stream where interruption would be costly. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips for the applicable setup guidance.
When to contact your ISP
If the encoder output is healthy but upload or connectivity tests show a problem, contact your ISP and provide the test results and timestamps of the disconnects. YouTube recommends contacting the ISP when internet testing identifies a problem. Ask about the upload capacity and reliability available at your address; results can vary by location and connection, and the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that Indian providers generally throttle or drop continuous streams.
Do not identify a particular provider as the cause without evidence from your own connection. If the encoder itself is reporting errors or Live Control Room points to stream settings, resolve those findings before treating the issue as an ISP fault.
