Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose the highest resolution and frame rate your encoder and outbound connection can sustain reliably—with YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate and about 20% upload headroom. There is no special resolution requirement for a 24/7 stream. If a higher setting makes the stream unstable, step down and test again.
Start with the codec, frame rate and bitrate
Resolution alone does not determine the bandwidth a live stream needs. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help’s H.264 ingest recommendations, checked on 2026-10-03; they are not upload-video recommendations or guarantees of stream quality.
| H.264 ingest setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth option for content that does not need more detail or smooth motion. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Consider 60 fps when the content benefits from smoother motion and the setup can sustain it. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | More image detail than 720p, at a higher recommended ingest bitrate. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | More detail and a higher frame rate, with the highest recommended bitrate among these H.264 examples. |
These values apply to H.264. YouTube lists different ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so look up the recommendation for the codec you actually use rather than applying the H.264 numbers to another encoder format. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings and live streaming guidelines.
Check whether your connection can sustain the setting
Your stream’s total bitrate must fit within available outbound upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; its guidance also emphasizes connection reliability, since an interruption can disrupt a live stream. A speed test is only a snapshot, so do not assume a single peak result represents what the connection can sustain continuously.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Measure upload performance under the conditions in which the stream will run, including the same network and other expected household or office traffic.
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate—not just the video bitrate—with available outbound capacity, then reserve the recommended headroom.
- If you use primary and backup streams, account for the bandwidth used by both.
- If you cannot fit the recommended bitrate with headroom, lower resolution or frame rate and test again. This is a practical response to YouTube’s bandwidth and reliability guidance, not an automatic YouTube fallback rule.
Choose 720p or 1080p—and 30 or 60 fps
Prefer 720p when stability is the constraint
720p can be a sensible choice when the connection cannot reliably support the higher recommended bitrate for 1080p, or when the source material does not benefit much from extra detail. Both 720p30 and 720p60 have an 8 Mbps H.264 recommended bitrate in YouTube’s table. That does not mean 60 fps is always the better choice: use it when the content’s motion benefits from the added frame rate and the encoder and connection handle it reliably.
Choose 1080p when the workload supports it
1080p may suit content where additional detail matters, provided your actual encoding setup and outbound connection sustain the corresponding bitrate with headroom. YouTube lists 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 H.264 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264. A setting that repeatedly loses stability is a worse practical choice than a lower one that stays healthy.

Remember that YouTube transcodes live streams
The ingest resolution is not a promise that every viewer receives exactly that one resolution. YouTube says it creates multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Choose a sound ingest setting for your source and connection, then assess the actual stream rather than assuming all viewers see the same output.
Test the complete setup before relying on it
- Identify the exact encoder format. Note the codec and actual frame rate, then use YouTube’s recommendation for that combination—not a bitrate figure for a different codec or frame rate.
- Set a candidate resolution and bitrate. Check that the total stream bitrate fits sustained outbound capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with similar audio and video movement before going live.
- Watch stream health and messages. Look for problems during the test and adjust the setting if the stream is not stable.
- Repeat after lowering resolution or frame rate if needed. Test the revised setting under the same representative conditions before using it for a continuous stream.
YouTube’s guidance does not specify a 24/7 resolution, a minimum uptime, or a duration that proves a setup will remain stable indefinitely. A successful test helps evaluate the configuration; it cannot establish that every network disruption or encoder failure has been ruled out.

Treat latency as a separate decision
Resolution and frame rate determine the video being sent; latency affects how quickly viewers see it. YouTube says lower latency can increase playback buffering, and that low latency matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. For a continuous prerecorded stream without live interaction, choose latency based on the viewing experience you need rather than lowering it by default. Monitor stream health and playback after making changes.
YouTube’s preference for 1440p or 2160p when supported applies to 360-degree livestreaming. It is a special-format recommendation, not a general resolution rule for ordinary 24/7 streams.
