This method is for video files stored on your computer—not a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
Before you set up the stream
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Initial live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your event. YouTube’s general guidance says live streamers must be at least 16. - Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Prepare local media files that you have the right to stream. Keep them accessible on the computer for the whole broadcast.
Add and configure the playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video. If that source is missing, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC).
- Open the VLC Video source properties. Add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Review the list before closing the properties; the playlist order determines the sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart from the first item after the final one. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; it is a separate control and is off by default in the OBS guide.
- Check that the source is visible in the intended scene. Add overlays or still images as separate sources, and confirm the playlist audio is reaching OBS’s stream mix by watching the audio meters and listening to a test.
For one file rather than several, OBS’s standard Media Source can play an individual media file and has a Loop option. VLC Video is the documented choice for a multi-file playlist with separate loop and shuffle controls. OBS Project: Media Sources
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or manage the stream event. Copy the event’s stream URL (server) and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the YouTube service and enter the server URL and stream key supplied for the event. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Apply the settings, then start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, inspect the incoming preview and stream health before starting the YouTube event. YouTube’s guidance is to start the encoder, check the preview, and then begin the event. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- When the broadcast is over, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder in OBS.
Choose stable video, audio and network settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Its general encoder guidance calls for H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that both your computer and upload connection can sustain; there is no single setting that is best for every file and connection. - Upload capacity: YouTube recommends upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. A connection that barely matches the configured bitrate leaves little room for fluctuations.
- Reliability: Use a stable connection and test at the intended quality. Ethernet is an optional way to connect a computer and compatible router directly; it does not compensate for inadequate internet service.
- Test content: Run a test with representative motion and audio. Check that the picture appears in YouTube’s preview, the audio is present, and the stream health is acceptable before the scheduled broadcast.
- Monitoring: Keep an eye on OBS and Live Control Room during the stream. YouTube advises setting up encoder streams well ahead of time and starting the encoder before the scheduled event. For a different ingestion workflow, YouTube also supports HLS in specified circumstances and codecs. HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion; it uses TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Copyright and streaming from India
Only include material you are entitled to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid an interruption. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube’s live-stream terms say that the provider represents it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content and must comply with applicable laws and any licensing, registration or notification requirements in the stream territory. The applicable obligations can depend on the content and use; this setup guide does not establish a complete India-specific legal checklist. Troubleshoot common playlist-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
