Use OBS’s VLC Video Source for a multi-video playlist: add your files to its playlist, leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, and choose whether Loop Playlist should restart the list after the final video. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS.
Set up a playlist that advances automatically
- Check the VLC prerequisite. Install VLC if VLC Video Source is missing from OBS. OBS documents that VLC must be installed for the source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes the requirement.
- Add the source to your scene. In OBS, select the scene you want, then use the Sources dock’s add-source control and choose VLC Video Source. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how to add sources.
- Put your videos in the playlist. Open the VLC Video Source properties and add the video files you want to play. The source supports multiple files and advances through its playlist.
- Choose the order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play files in the order listed. Turn it on only if you want randomized playback. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- Choose what happens after the last file. With Loop Playlist on, the source restarts after it runs out of media files. Turn it off to let playback stop at the end. OBS documents this option as on by default.
The names and defaults above are those in OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022. If a control is named or presented differently in your installed OBS version, check that source’s properties.
Choose the right OBS source for your playback goal
| Goal | Use | Relevant setting |
|---|---|---|
| Play one video file | Media Source | Loop repeats that individual file. |
| Advance through multiple video files | VLC Video Source | Add files to its playlist; playback advances through the items. |
| Play the playlist in its listed order | VLC Video Source | Leave Shuffle Playlist off. |
| Restart the playlist after its final file | VLC Video Source | Turn Loop Playlist on. |
| Stop after the final file | VLC Video Source | Turn Loop Playlist off. |
OBS describes VLC Video Source as allowing a playlist, “similar to an Image Slideshow.” A Media Source’s Restart playback when source becomes active setting concerns restarting an individual file when its source becomes active; it does not create a multi-file queue.
If you need playback to restart when a scene becomes active
That is separate from automatically advancing to the next playlist item. For a single Media Source file, OBS forum guidance recommends enabling Restart playback when source becomes active. For VLC Video Source, the forum discussion also points to VLC’s visibility behavior. See the OBS forum discussion; it concerns activation and restart behavior, not the basic playlist setup.

Optional folder-based alternative
PlayFolder is a community Lua script resource that describes scanning a chosen folder and playing files sequentially through a Media Source. Its resource page lists an update on September 24, 2026. It is a third-party extension, not the built-in VLC playlist workflow; check the page’s current compatibility and instructions before relying on it.
Troubleshoot a playlist that will not advance
- VLC Video Source is not in the add-source list: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS documents 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Only one file repeats: You may have added a Media Source and enabled its Loop property. Use VLC Video Source and add the files to its playlist for multi-file playback.
- The videos play in an unexpected order: Check Shuffle Playlist. Turn it off for the listed order.
- The list starts over after the last video: Turn off Loop Playlist if playback should stop at the end.
- A video restarts when you switch scenes: Check source activation and visibility settings. The Media Source restart option affects activation, not playlist creation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and the stream can keep running with your computer off.
