YouTube Studio schedules the live event, but it does not play your finished video for you. To broadcast a recording as a YouTube Live stream, create or schedule an event in YouTube Studio, then send the video to that event using an encoder such as OBS, a cloud playout service, or optional dedicated hardware. For the simplest do-it-yourself route, use OBS and keep the computer and its internet connection running for the entire broadcast.
What you need to know before starting
Think of a scheduled live stream as two connected pieces: the broadcast, which is the YouTube event page and its settings, and the stream, which is the video and audio sent into that event. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation distinguishes these resources. Scheduling the broadcast does not automatically send a video file; an encoder or playout service must provide the media.
For a local setup, OBS plays the prepared file and sends it to YouTube. That means OBS, the computer, and the upload connection must remain available throughout the stream. A cloud playout service can send an uploaded file without relying on a home computer at broadcast time. A dedicated encoder is another option, but is not necessary for a typical OBS workflow.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before the scheduled broadcast.

All content in live streams must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, as stated in YouTube’s getting-started guidance. Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A recording does not avoid copyright or other platform rules, and setting a video to private or unlisted does not grant rights to use material in it.
Method 1: Broadcast the recording with OBS
1. Schedule the YouTube event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live.
- In the Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and create a new stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide documents the scheduled-event workflow.
- Enter the event title, description, visibility, and scheduled time. Select the audience setting and any other details YouTube requests.
- Keep the Live Control Room open or note which scheduled event you are setting up. You will need to send the recording to this specific event.
2. Connect OBS to the event
- Open OBS and add the recording as a media source: in the Sources box, select +, choose Media Source, then browse to the video file. Enable Loop only if you intend the recording to repeat.
- Set up the YouTube connection in OBS. If you are not using OBS’s direct YouTube integration, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to find these values.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Preview the scene. Confirm the video is visible, audio meters move when the recording plays, and the correct microphone or desktop audio is not being added unintentionally.
3. Test the scheduled start and stop
Before the event, test the complete path if possible. The OBS community’s YouTube streaming guide notes that scheduled-stream auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether sending encoder data alone takes the event live. Check those controls in YouTube Studio rather than assuming OBS starting automatically makes the public broadcast begin. Confirm whether you want the event to start and end automatically or whether you will manage those actions yourself.

4. Go live and monitor playback
- At the scheduled time, make sure OBS is sending the intended recording to the correct event. Watch the Live Control Room’s preview or status indicators for incoming video and audio.
- Keep the computer awake, OBS open, the file accessible, and the network connection active for the duration. Avoid restarting the computer or changing the stream key mid-broadcast.
- When the video is finished, stop the stream according to the event’s auto-stop setting. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder guidance for current archive details.
Method 2: Use cloud playout for scheduled playback
Cloud playout is useful when you do not want a computer at home to play and send the file during the broadcast. The service uploads or selects the media, connects to YouTube, and starts sending it on the schedule you configure. This is distinct from scheduling the YouTube event itself: verify how the service hands off to the event you intend to use.
For example, Upstream’s prerecorded-stream guide describes choosing YouTube, uploading a video or playlist, setting timing and playback behavior, reviewing the event, and having its cloud system start playout. OneStream Live’s scheduling guide documents selecting or uploading a video, choosing YouTube as a destination, setting stream details, and scheduling; its help material also describes playlists, looping, and sending content to an existing YouTube event. These are service-documented workflows, not independent performance tests. Check each provider’s current plan limits, schedule controls, account permissions, archive behavior, and event handoff before relying on it.

Optional hardware: AJA HELO Plus
YouTube’s verified encoder list identifies the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder and describes optional PlayToStream support for scheduled prerecorded media without a computer. It is specialized equipment, not a requirement for the OBS or cloud approaches. Confirm the exact feature configuration and current availability with the manufacturer or seller before purchasing.
Choose the workflow that fits your broadcast
| Workflow | What it does | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on a computer | Plays a local recording and sends it to the scheduled YouTube event. | Computer, OBS, file access, and upload connection must stay available during the broadcast. |
| Cloud playout service | Sends uploaded or selected prerecorded media from the service’s infrastructure. | Check provider-specific limits, settings, pricing, and event handoff; vendor instructions do not establish independent performance. |
| AJA HELO Plus with optional PlayToStream | Dedicated hardware can support scheduled prerecorded media without a computer, according to YouTube’s verified encoder listing. | Specialist equipment; confirm configuration and availability before purchase. |
Troubleshooting common problems
The scheduled event exists, but no video appears
The event page is not a media player. Check that OBS or the cloud service is actually sending video, and that it is connected to the correct scheduled event and stream key.

YouTube does not receive the encoder signal
Confirm the stream URL and key belong to the intended event, and check that they were entered correctly in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed or copied incorrectly, generate or copy the correct key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
The video appears, but there is no sound
In OBS, play the file and watch its audio meter. Verify the media source is not muted and that the intended audio track is enabled. Check the Live Control Room preview before the scheduled start.

OBS sends data, but the event does not go live as expected
Check the scheduled event’s auto-start and auto-stop controls in YouTube Studio. These settings determine whether the event starts or stops automatically when encoder data is sent; do not assume the OBS connection alone controls the event state.
The broadcast stops when the computer is shut down or disconnected
That is expected for the local OBS method: the computer and upload connection are part of the sending path. Keep them running and connected, or use a cloud playout workflow if you need playback without a local computer at broadcast time.
