To broadcast continuously, you also need a playout source that keeps sending video to YouTube and an encoder that stays connected. For a hands-on setup, OBS can provide the encoder and transition controls, but the computer must remain available. A cloud service can handle playout remotely.
What OBS transitions do—and what they don’t
In OBS Studio, a scene transition is the visual change between the scene currently on air and another scene. Fade and Cut are available when OBS is first launched; the OBS guide also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color and Luma Wipe as transitions you can add. You can select the active transition and set its duration. OBS scene transitions guide
A transition is an operator control, not a 24/7 scheduler. It does not, by itself, sequence files, loop a playlist or reconnect the encoder to YouTube. Treat scene design, video playout and the live encoder connection as separate parts of the setup.
Set up a transition in OBS
- Build the scenes. In the OBS Scenes panel, create the scenes you want to use and add the relevant sources to each one. For example, a game-stream layout might have a gameplay scene and a holding screen. Scene contents are separate from the transition effect.
- Choose the transition. In the Scene Transitions area, select a built-in transition such as Fade or Cut. Add another transition if you need a different effect.
- Set the duration. Adjust the duration for the selected transition. A Cut changes scenes immediately; a Fade takes the configured time. Preview the result before relying on it in a live broadcast.
- Switch scenes when ready. With Studio Mode off, selecting another scene changes the program output according to the active transition. For a 24/7 unattended stream, this is not a substitute for automated file playback or a playlist tool.
Use Studio Mode to prepare a scene before it goes live
Studio Mode separates the live program from the editable preview. Prepare the next scene in the preview area while the current scene remains on air, then use Transition to send the preview to the program output. This is useful when you want to check a layout or make changes without immediately exposing them to viewers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS also supports Quick Transitions, which can have their own durations, and hotkeys for transition actions. These controls still require an operator or another workflow to trigger them; they do not automatically advance prerecorded videos.
Keep prerecorded video playing and connected to YouTube
A 24/7 prerecorded broadcast needs a continuous video feed as well as scene changes. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, then connect an encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder and Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

- Enable live streaming. If the channel has not streamed before, enable live streaming and allow for the activation time YouTube describes in its encoder guide.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy its stream URL and private stream key.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service or enter the server details as appropriate, and provide the stream key. Do not share or publish that key.
- Set up the video source or playout workflow. Make sure the prerecorded video or playlist continues to provide frames and audio. A scene transition alone does not create file sequencing or looping; follow the instructions for the media source or playout tool you choose.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube. Start streaming from OBS, then verify that YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy stream status before relying on it.
With local OBS, the computer running OBS and the video source must stay powered, connected and available for as long as they are responsible for the broadcast. Cloud playout moves that continuous job off the home computer; it is a workflow choice, not an OBS transition setting.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS. For RTMP or RTMPS, it lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; use YouTube’s bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Check the YouTube live encoder settings for the current table and recommendations.

Choose settings your upload connection and computer can sustain. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health. A static holding screen may behave differently from fast gameplay or a video with continuous motion, so test the content you actually plan to broadcast.
Transition controls: OBS alone or a Stream Deck
OBS includes the scene selection and transition controls needed for manual switching; extra hardware is optional. Elgato’s OBS integration documents Stream Deck actions for scene selection, Studio Mode, preview-to-program and transition effect or duration control. It can make manual operation more convenient, but it does not replace a continuous playout workflow. Check compatibility for the specific Stream Deck device and software before buying. Protect the channel and the stream
YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast; being able to play a file in OBS does not establish that you are licensed to stream it. Repeated or prerecorded programming should not be assumed to be permitted in every case: review YouTube’s rules and your rights for the specific material and channel. - The scene changes instantly. Check whether Cut is selected, or whether the selected transition duration is effectively zero. Choose Fade or another effect and set the duration you want.
- Edits appear on air before you are ready. Use Studio Mode to prepare changes in preview, then explicitly transition them to program.
- The scene changes, but the video does not advance. A scene transition does not sequence prerecorded files. Check the media source or separate playout tool responsible for looping and file changes.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. Confirm the stream URL and private key, that live streaming is enabled, and that OBS is actively sending. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The stream health warning appears or playback is unstable. Test the upload connection and encoder settings with representative motion and audio. Check the current YouTube bitrate guidance for your codec, resolution and frame rate, and monitor stream health rather than assuming a successful OBS start means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- The broadcast stops when you leave. If local OBS is the encoder, its computer and network connection need to remain available. A cloud playout setup avoids depending on a home computer staying on.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
