How to Install FFmpeg on Raspberry Pi OS for YouTube Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Raspberry Pi OS, install FFmpeg from a terminal with sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install ffmpeg. That installs the software; it does not configure or start a YouTube broadcast. For that, you also need a video or camera input, a compatible FFmpeg build and encoder setup, your YouTube stream URL and key, and enough upload capacity.

Install FFmpeg on Raspberry Pi OS

  1. Open Terminal on the Pi, or connect over SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect if remote access is already set up. The Pi needs a network connection to download packages. Wi-Fi or Ethernet can work; Ethernet is not mandatory if your Wi-Fi connection is suitable.
  2. Refresh APT’s local package lists:
    sudo apt update
  3. Install FFmpeg:
    sudo apt install ffmpeg
  4. When installation finishes, check that the executable is available:
    ffmpeg -version

Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation gives sudo apt install ffmpeg as the installation command, and its OS documentation recommends refreshing package lists before installing packages: Raspberry Pi OS documentation and camera software documentation. Raspberry Pi OS is Debian-based; although the release information lists a Debian Trixie-based image released on 15 September 2026, an existing Pi may run an older release. The APT commands above do not assume a particular release.

Check what your FFmpeg build supports

Package capabilities can vary by OS image and architecture. Check the installed build before writing a stream command that depends on a particular encoder or protocol:

  • ffmpeg -encoders lists encoders available in the installed build.
  • ffmpeg -protocols lists protocols available in the installed build.

These are practical verification checks; they do not guarantee that a listed encoder can sustain a particular resolution or frame rate on your Pi. The generic install command does not establish hardware-encoding support or model-specific performance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What else you need to stream to YouTube

FFmpeg is only the encoder software. A live broadcast needs a source, settings that your Pi and build can handle, YouTube ingest details, and a stable upload connection. A camera is optional: you can use a camera-based source or another available video source. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation covers camera workflows, but a camera is not required to install FFmpeg.

  1. In YouTube Studio, set up the live stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to enter these in the encoder: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password; do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or example.
  3. Choose a source and configure FFmpeg with a video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and YouTube ingest URL. The exact command depends on the input and the installed FFmpeg build, so there is no single command guaranteed to work for every Pi and source.
  4. Start the encoder, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream during the event.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the codec and protocol you plan to use.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingest bitrates, not guarantees of what a particular Raspberry Pi can encode or transmit reliably. Leave headroom for audio and network variation, and choose a lower resolution or frame rate if the Pi or connection cannot sustain the target. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; that does not remove the need for a stable source stream.

Test the Pi and connection before going live

  • Run an internet speed test and compare the available upload rate with your planned stream bitrate. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity.
  • Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static or silent scene. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, overheating or other signs the setup is struggling.
  • Monitor YouTube stream health during the test and event. If the connection fluctuates, reduce the bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again.
  • Wi-Fi can be used when available, but its stability depends on the network and signal at the Pi. Ethernet is another option; neither connection type guarantees adequate upload capacity.

YouTube also notes that enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. If the Live Control Room does not let you start, account eligibility or first-time activation may be the reason rather than an FFmpeg installation problem.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

  • ffmpeg: command not found: confirm the install completed, then try ffmpeg -version again. If APT could not download packages, check the Pi’s network connection and repeat sudo apt update before installing.
  • The encoder or protocol is unavailable: inspect ffmpeg -encoders and ffmpeg -protocols. A build may not include the capability your command requests; the generic package install does not promise identical support on every image.
  • YouTube does not receive a signal: verify the stream URL and key in the encoder configuration, check that the key has not been mistyped or exposed, and confirm YouTube’s live setup is enabled. Do not post the key while asking for help.
  • Stream health reports instability or frames drop: check actual upload capacity and reduce the selected bitrate, resolution or frame rate until the setup is sustainable; run another test.
  • The Pi cannot keep up: try a less demanding output and verify the chosen encoder is available. There is no model-independent promise that a Pi can handle 1080p60 or any other specific target.
  • YouTube rejects the source or audio: check that the selected codec, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio format match YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and confirm your FFmpeg build supports them.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, game footage and other material in the stream. A live encoder does not grant permission to use copyrighted content. YouTube’s systems or a rights holder may restrict or interrupt a stream. Separately, if you later monetize the channel, assess whether your content adds original value and complies with YouTube’s monetization policies; simply looping or rebroadcasting material is not a shortcut to eligibility. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated content.
