To loop several podcast files in an OBS broadcast, add an OBS VLC Video Source, load the files in the order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. For a single file, use a Media Source and enable Loop. The playlist can repeat, but the YouTube broadcast still depends on your computer, OBS, and internet connection staying online.
Before you set up the playlist
- Check live-stream eligibility: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Prepare files you can rebroadcast: Keep the podcast audio or video files accessible on the computer running OBS. Make sure you have the necessary rights for every episode, recording, and piece of music; downloading or owning a copy does not by itself grant permission to livestream it.
- Install VLC for a multi-file playlist: OBS’s VLC Video Source relies on VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. See OBS Media Sources.
YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights, and to comply with relevant laws. Whether a particular podcast is cleared for rebroadcast in India depends on the rights and permissions for that content; the general platform guidance does not settle that question. Review the YouTube livestream terms and get permission from the relevant rights holders where needed.
Choose the right OBS source
| OBS source | Use it for | What repeats | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source with Loop | One podcast file | The same file | Simple setup, but it does not create a multi-file playlist. |
| VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist | Several local files | The list starts again after its final file | Requires VLC; check playlist order and visibility behavior. |
OBS also provides Shuffle Playlist for a VLC source. Leave it off if you need episodes to play in a fixed sequence. The choices are documented in the Media Sources guide; the OBS Sources Guide notes that the VLC playlist source is available when VLC is installed.
Set up a continuous playlist in OBS
- Open or create your scene. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the broadcast. Add a source using the + button in the Sources panel.
- Add a VLC Video Source. Choose VLC Video Source, create a source, and add your podcast files to its playlist in the order you want them played. Confirm the files are available at the paths shown in the playlist.
- Enable repetition. Turn on Loop Playlist so playback returns to the start after the final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the order randomized rather than fixed.
- Set visibility behavior. The VLC Video Source has a Visibility Behaviour option that controls what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents stopping playback when hidden and restarting when visible as the default. If the playlist must continue across scene changes, choose the continue-playing behavior if it is available in your installed OBS version.
- For one file instead: Add a Media Source, select the file, and turn on Loop. OBS supports common media formats, including MP3 and MP4.
- Check the scene before streaming. Confirm the source is visible, the video fits the canvas if it contains video, and the audio meters respond during playback. Let the source advance through an item and verify that the next file starts.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service or the relevant custom server option, then enter the URL and key as appropriate for the selected setup. YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address used by the encoder; keep it private. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
- Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check both picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.
- During the broadcast, monitor OBS and YouTube’s event status, the playlist, and the audio and video. YouTube recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom of about 20% above the total stream bitrate. Its streaming tips also recommend testing the setup and checking stream quality.
- When finished, stop the stream in OBS and confirm the event has ended in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; longer streams may not be.
What “continuously” means in this setup
Loop Playlist repeats the files inside OBS; it does not keep the broadcast online by itself. The encoder computer must remain powered on, OBS must keep running, and the internet connection must stay usable. A shutdown, OBS crash, network interruption, or YouTube event issue can interrupt the live stream even while looping is enabled. YouTube recommends rehearsal, previewing before going live, and monitoring the event, but does not promise uninterrupted operation.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. The VLC playlist source depends on that installation.
- The playlist stops after the last file: Reopen the VLC source properties and make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. Check that the files are actually in the playlist.
- Playback stops during a scene change: Inspect Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while hidden; choose a continue behavior if available in your version.
- One file does not repeat: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. This setting is separate from VLC’s playlist loop.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is streaming, the stream URL and key match the selected YouTube event, and the stream key was entered correctly. Do not post or share the key; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Audio or video is unstable: Test before the public broadcast, check the preview and OBS meters, and reduce the total stream bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Keep roughly 20% upload bandwidth above the total stream bitrate as YouTube recommends.
- YouTube interrupts or restricts the broadcast: Check the Live Control Room for event notices and review the channel’s live-stream eligibility and content rights. A looping setup does not override YouTube restrictions or grant rebroadcast permission.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded podcast videos to loop without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a camera feed. You still need the rights to rebroadcast your content. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
